Boston: Summer Ballet Fun!
Hey everyone, Emma here! Summer is officially upon us, and that means one thing for this ballet-obsessed girl: it's tutu season! The days are longer, the sun is shining, and the city is buzzing with energy. There’s simply no better time to get your ballet fix, whether you're a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner.
This year, I'm diving headfirst into the Boston ballet scene, and I'm bringing you all along for the ride! I’ve got everything from summer workshops and performances to chic places to grab a pink-hued post-ballet latte, so get ready for some seriously #tutusummer fun.
The Summer Ballet Workshops: Get Your Groove On
Who says ballet is only for winter? This summer, Boston's dance studios are offering a whole host of workshops and classes, perfect for brushing up on technique or exploring new styles. Let’s face it: learning ballet can be sweaty, but in summer it's seriously satisfying!
Here are a few of my favourite workshops:
Ballet Barre with a View: The Boston Conservatory at Berklee always throws the most glamorous workshops. Picture yourself perched on a rooftop barre with breathtaking views of the city, taking in the fresh air and the sun’s golden glow while mastering those perfect port de bras. It doesn't get much more Boston summer than that, right? They also offer incredible themed workshops on classical ballet styles like Balançoire (think: ethereal leaps and graceful turns) and on ballet barre and stretch.
Move Like a Queen: This Queen's Ballet Academy class will channel your inner royal! They're known for their stunning costumes (you have to see the gorgeous pink tutus!), and they’ve got classes for all levels, including the complete newbie.
The Power of Pointe: Want to learn to dance en pointe? Well, now's your chance! The Boston Ballet always has some incredible pointe workshops, usually hosted by one of their amazing principal dancers, ready to pass on their knowledge.
Get Your Disco On!
What would summer be without a bit of disco flair? Look out for "Dance Like Disco" classes - I've heard they’re becoming the hot trend across Boston studios this year. These sessions offer a high-energy blend of ballet moves with the infectious rhythm of 70s disco, which gives the traditional ballerina aesthetic a completely sassy and cool revamp. The choreography is seriously fun - think swivel turns, leg kicks, and plenty of attitude! Plus, the studio always plays some classic disco anthems for that added flair.
Summer Ballet Performances: Because It's Not All About Workouts
Okay, so who's ready for some serious #tutusummer glamour? Summer in Boston means spectacular ballet performances that combine artistry, skill, and pure theatre magic. Here are a few not to be missed:
The Boston Ballet: There's always something magical about watching these world-renowned dancers, whether it’s a classic like Swan Lake or a captivating new production. This summer, keep an eye out for their Summer Encore season, usually featuring short but dazzling performances perfect for dipping your toes into the world of ballet. You can’t miss it, darling, just make sure you book your tickets early.
The Dance Complex: Head to the Dance Complex for a more contemporary approach to ballet. They’ve got a wide range of performances, including ballet companies showcasing fresh, innovative choreography, or exciting shows featuring young, emerging dancers – always worth catching!
And For After The Show, Grab Some Glamour
Summer's a time to be extra, darlings. After a performance, it’s time for a sophisticated treat!
Post-ballet Prosecco: For a quintessential Boston experience, head to The Paramount - its grand atmosphere and beautiful terrace are a stunning backdrop for some pink champagne (my favourite!).
Tea With A View: The Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum always has delicious afternoon tea! Indulge in classic finger sandwiches and decadent pastries. Their waterfront location boasts beautiful views and a relaxed ambience perfect for post-ballet chitchat.
Pink Hues Please: Nothing beats a pink-hued treat after a night of ballet. Try "The Flamingo" at the new cafe at the Museum of Fine Arts, where they offer pretty, pink latte art perfect for a summer-themed gram!
