Hello beautiful dancers! It's Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed blogger, and I am so excited that the summer ballet season is finally here! East Ham is buzzing with so much fun, there's something for everyone, whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting started. So get ready to werk that plié and embrace your inner prima ballerina (or maybe a disco-dancing diva, wink wink!) because we're about to have a summer to remember!
Disco Fever:
It wouldn't be summer without a bit of disco, right? And what's more fun than getting your groove on in a fluffy tutu and a shimmery top? There are so many fab classes popping up everywhere. I've been loving the new Funky Fusion classes at Dance Haven - a mix of hip-hop and classic ballet moves with an insane playlist that will make you wanna shake what your mama gave you! They're offering introductory classes all summer, so grab your besties and head down. It's the perfect way to try something new, let loose, and own the dance floor.
For the Little Ones:
Let's not forget about our little ballerinas and danseur (and I’m talking about all the budding superstars aged 4-7! There’s so much happening for the under 8s. Look out for the fabulous "Summer Adventures" workshops at the East Ham Theatre School. They offer a whole summer of themed ballet lessons, like "Enchanted Forest" or "The Mermaid’s Tale," that combine fun stories, imaginative movement, and loads of laughs. Plus, the costumes are absolutely adorable! The “Twinkle Toes” classes at East Ham Dance Academy are also brilliant - they’re all about introducing young ones to the world of dance with gentle steps, playful routines and loads of encouragement, making it the perfect way for kids to explore their creativity and gain confidence, all while having a ball.
En pointe, please:
Okay, now for my absolute favourite - en pointe work! There’s nothing more empowering than standing on the tips of your toes, feeling those muscles work and achieving those beautiful lines. Luckily, East Ham has some of the best studios around. For the seasoned pro, you have to check out East Ham Ballet School’s Advanced Pointe Technique classes - they’re challenging, focused, and the atmosphere is fantastic, allowing you to really dive into your pointe work with a supportive teacher and experienced classmates. For those newer to pointe, the "First Steps en Pointe" class at Graceful Steps Studio is brilliant. They've got a fantastic introductory course perfect for prepping your feet and getting those muscles strong and ready for en pointe!
Taking it outside:
Don't think ballet is all about indoor studios and practice rooms! Summer's all about soaking up the sunshine, and East Ham has some fantastic outdoor ballet experiences on offer. There’s the fabulous "Ballet in the Park" event in June - think classic ballets performed in a gorgeous outdoor setting with picnic blankets and snacks. It's a wonderful way to experience ballet in a new and relaxed setting. And speaking of the park, there's nothing quite like taking your practice outside with "Outdoor Barre Work" classes offered at several parks across the area. So, grab a friend, pack a water bottle, and work on those extensions while soaking up the sun and fresh air!
And for the trendiest of them all …
Of course, we can't forget about the fashion side of ballet. Summer’s the perfect excuse for a bold new tutu - so many gorgeous, vibrant colours, from the traditional pink to electrifying turquoise! You know my heart loves a bold, pink tutu! And East Ham has some fab shops where you can find everything you need - from Tutu Paradise to Dancers' Delights, where you’ll find gorgeous styles to match your dancing style, from classic and elegant to fun and modern, with something for everyone.
And remember - your summer look doesn't just stop at the tutu! Accessorize with some fab legwarmers, chic headbands, and cute little bags. And most importantly, have a smile on your face - confidence is always your best accessory!
