Summer Ballet Fun for Paris

Parisian Tutus: Your Guide to a Summer of Ballet Fun!

By Emma, Parisian Ballet Blogger

Hello darlings! Summer in Paris means sunshine, picnics in the Jardin du Luxembourg, and of course... ballet! As a Parisian girl born and bred, I know this city is buzzing with ballet energy in the summer. We've got world-class performances, fabulous dance workshops, and enough tutu-worthy sunshine to keep you twirling all season long.

This year, let's embrace a vibrant, colourful ballet summer. Think bright pinks, sunshine yellows, and of course, dazzling tutus. Imagine twirling beneath the Eiffel Tower with the wind in your hair and a little bit of disco flair in your steps – that's the Parisian ballet vibe we're going for this year!

So, grab your favourite leotard, your best smile, and let's dive into this incredible summer ballet season together. Here's a little glimpse of what we have planned:

#1 - The Must-See Performances:

Summer in Paris means a whirlwind of ballet productions! It's your chance to witness legendary dancers and dazzling choreography.

  • *Paris Opera Ballet: *The heart of ballet in Paris, the Opera House always offers incredible programmes. This year, they have a mix of classics like Giselle and Swan Lake but also contemporary gems you don't want to miss. Check out their website for upcoming productions. They do special 'Family Days' where they perform ballets suitable for young children. I would say, go see The Nutcracker - it's the one to bring the little ones to!
  • Grand Palais: A stunning location right next to the Eiffel Tower for performances in a completely different atmosphere from the traditional theatre. They showcase both contemporary and classical dance throughout the summer.
  • Théâtre du Châtelet: Known for its contemporary and experimental programmes, Châtelet always offers a unique perspective on ballet. Check out their website to see what they've got planned for this year.

#2 - Ballet Classes for All Levels:

The best thing about summer? You can get your dance on outdoors! Here’s how to find your perfect ballet class.

  • *Jardin du Luxembourg: *Picture yourself in the stunning Jardin du Luxembourg, bathed in sunlight, learning ballet surrounded by flowerbeds and Parisian charm! They have drop-in classes for every level, from beginners to advanced, in styles like classical ballet, contemporary, and even barre classes! The teachers are so welcoming, they will put you at ease even if you haven’t danced before.
  • *Parks in the 16th and 17th arrondissements: *Look out for ‘Dance in the Park’ initiatives! You’ll often find pop-up workshops, ballet-inspired fitness, or just impromptu dance sessions! Keep your eyes peeled on social media - these happen last minute!

#3 – Dance Yourself Silly:

Beyond traditional ballet classes, let's explore some summer fun with a sprinkle of Parisian magic! Think outdoor workshops, pop-up dance events, and dance parties that embrace the season's playful spirit.

  • *Dance-Along with the Street Performers: *Every sunny day, you can spot talented street performers around Paris. I absolutely love this spontaneous ballet! You might see ballerinas in the Marais, or even right outside the Opera House. You can watch them dance and then maybe join in and get some great video footage for your TikTok!
  • The Marais Dance Events: A hotbed of creative energy, The Marais offers vibrant dance classes, workshops, and even open-air performances all summer long. You could be dancing at the Place des Vosges with a little champagne afterwards, who knows?
  • *‘Disco in the Park' * - I can't recommend these enough! Paris has a secret disco dancing community. Watch social media for local announcements about where and when to head to a pop up disco rave, the energy is electric!

#4 – Shop for Your Summer Dance Look:

What’s a Parisian ballerina without her perfectly curated ballet wardrobe? We'll dive into where to shop for those essential summer ballet looks! The shops are overflowing with fun fabrics, summery colours and - let’s not forget- all the fabulous accessories you’ll need. Think leotards and tutus for daytime and even a little bit of glitz for your evening dance adventures. I recommend the Marais - that's my favourite place to find some really cool boutiques.

  • The Department Stores: Don’t overlook the classics, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. Their dance sections are on another level. You’ll find everything from simple basic leotards to exquisite tutus for a show-stopping dance class look! And remember - don’t forget to look out for the fabulous sale events in the summer! You could even find a beautiful second hand dance piece to complete your look!

  • *Online Shopping: *There's something really special about buying clothes online, even more so in summer! The online shopping scene is just phenomenal in Paris. Don't underestimate Etsy or Depop for beautiful second hand pieces or Depop for discovering hidden vintage gems for the perfect unique look!
  • *Boutiques in The Marais: * If you're on a mission to discover something a little bit special, wander down the streets in The Marais, you're sure to find something truly unique in one of these independent boutiques, just watch your credit card!

*#5 – Immerse Yourself in Ballet Culture: *

To truly embrace the Parisian ballet lifestyle, you need to step beyond the dance studios and into the rich cultural tapestry that surrounds the art. It's not just about dancing - it’s about the whole feeling and energy! It’s an art, a feeling and a way of life.

  • Paris Opera House Tour: Explore the heart of Parisian ballet with a tour of the Opéra Garnier. You'll feel the history of dance come alive through every intricate detail, from the breathtaking architecture to the iconic stages.
  • Musée Carnavalet: For the art-lovers amongst you, this museum houses stunning Parisian history. Immerse yourself in exhibitions showcasing centuries of dance culture, and explore the evolution of fashion through time! Don't miss out on their ballet exhibition and special collections relating to French dancing culture.
  • Bookstore Ballet Browsing: One of my favourite things is to visit the little independent bookshops around Paris. Dive into some dance-related literature - there are so many amazing books on dancers, biographies of famous ballerinas or ballet themed novels that will inspire you to twirl and pirouette! There's also some wonderful coffee table books, some filled with incredible ballet photography that make perfect summer souvenirs.

#6 – Discover The 'Little Gems':

Remember – It’s all about having fun!

  • Dance at a Pop-Up Ballet Class: Watch out for those outdoor pop-up ballet classes happening in the parks throughout the summer - those impromptu sessions always turn out to be such a great memory! Who knows, you might meet other dance enthusiasts just like you!
  • Outdoor Movie Night with a Ballet Twist: Picture a Parisian evening under the stars, with the Eiffel Tower glistening in the distance, a classic ballet playing on a big screen, a picnic basket by your side. And you’re all in a beautiful outdoor courtyard. The summer offers many chances for open-air cinema nights - keep an eye out on social media for ballet films!
  • *Dance to the City Sounds: * Parisian music and culture is an important part of ballet culture! Take a dance class and learn the cha cha or tango - there are a lot of options, it's about adding your personal flavour.
