Pink Tutu Post #101: A Whirlwind Through 1673! 🩰💖

Hello my darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad historian, Emma, here, and I’m back with another thrilling dive into the past! This week, we're waltzing back to the year 1673, a pivotal year in the evolution of ballet, and oh, how I wish I could have twirled right in the middle of it! 😉

Before I get all giddy about the dancing, let’s talk fashion, my absolute favourite topic! Imagine a world without sparkly tutus, sequins, or the sheer romance of a feather boa! Shocking, I know! In 1673, ladies were swishing about in elaborate, wide-skirted gowns, often adorned with intricate embroidery and opulent jewels. The focus was on the drama of the outfit itself, and while graceful and lovely, it wasn’t exactly designed for a pirouette or a jeté!

But don’t think that meant there weren't some dazzling looks. My research tells me that Louis XIV, the Sun King himself, was quite a trendsetter in the world of royal fashion! He made it the height of style for his ladies to be dressed in silk, velvet, and lace. Just imagine those flowing, soft materials... swoon!

Speaking of swooning, we have to talk about the Royal Academy of Dance! This momentous event, born in 1673, completely shifted the landscape of dance in France. They made ballet a theatrical spectacle, introducing story lines and costumes with elaborate dance sequences! It’s where the groundwork for the beautiful stories and movement of ballet we know today were laid.

Imagine the buzz in Paris, where audiences were enthralled by intricate steps, graceful gestures, and breathtaking stage sets. Can you just imagine yourself in the crowd, transported to another world, the lights shimmering on the dancers' costumes, their smiles radiant? It’s pure magic, and all those centuries ago, the seeds were sown for all that we experience in the world of ballet today.

Speaking of seeds being sown, can we talk about a little gem from the early 1700s - La Griselidis, a French ballet by the iconic French composer Lully? The story was based on the legend of Griselda, a tale of loyalty and perseverance! Just imagine the artistry, the emotions portrayed through movement, and the way the music perfectly enhanced the story. How utterly beautiful, and the perfect inspiration for my next performance!

You know me, I simply adore exploring these incredible moments in history! There’s nothing quite like seeing the roots of the art we love so much today. And, let me tell you, this journey has fueled my desire to wear a pink tutu more than ever! So much of our love for dance, fashion, and story-telling goes back to these incredible eras!

My dearest ballet enthusiasts, if you have the chance, head down to the library or online and delve into this wonderful period of ballet history. There's a world of inspiration to be found, just waiting for you to discover!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a street performance to prepare for! Who knows, I might just have some historical fashion on show - a hint of a courtly look, a touch of La Griselidis magic... wouldn't that be delightful!

Stay pink, stay fabulous, and keep dancing, Emma 💕
