Pink-Tutu Post #160: A Waltz Through 1732: Ballet’s Elegant Embrace!

Hey gorgeous dancers, twirlers and tutu-lovers!

It's your girl, Emma, back from another adventure in time, and let me tell you, this year was utterly delightful! 1732 was brimming with elegance, sophistication, and oh, the dance! Buckle up, my darlings, as we take a graceful twirl through a time where ballet truly reigned.

Now, imagine a world without smartphones, Instagram, or even the internet! It's hard, I know, but back in 1732, you couldn’t simply swipe through pictures of tutus to get your ballet fix. Oh no! The thrill of a show was an event, a once-in-a-blue-moon chance to experience the sheer beauty of ballet! I’ll be honest, this definitely made me appreciate those incredible tutus even more!

And speaking of tutus! Oh, darling, the ballet fashion in 1732 was beyond exquisite. Forget those boring "pancake" tutus, they were still in their early stages. No, my loves, this year was all about elaborate, flowing gowns! They were grand, dramatic, and bursting with delicate embroidery. Seriously, every ballerina looked like they’d stepped straight out of a fairy tale! I’ve never felt such a rush of creative inspiration from a historical era - maybe a pink tulle overdress will be making a comeback for a new look this year
 who knows!

You'll want to know about the must-see shows, right? Well, this year saw some amazing new ballets hit the stage! In Paris, I felt completely enraptured by the new work of Louis XIV’s "AcadĂ©mie Royale de Musique". Their ballerinas just flowed across the stage - it was absolute magic!

What to See? My Top Picks:

  • “Pygmalion” - It’s still a crowd favourite even today - this dramatic masterpiece premiered this year in France. I can't wait to see what you gorgeous dancers would do with this story - just imagine a beautifully designed tutu
 dreamy!
  • *“La Grotte de Baccante” *– It may be based on a myth about Dionysus and nymphs but it really caught my imagination - it had so many spectacular dance routines!

However, the real magic of 1732 wasn’t just the stage. It was the entire atmosphere! Picture grand theatres with opulent chandeliers, ladies dressed to the nines, gentlemen in powdered wigs, and a collective energy for dance that was truly contagious! And while tutus weren't quite as iconic as they are today, ballet’s popularity had already started spreading across Europe like wildfire.

I managed to snag myself a beautiful brocade dress with a hand-painted flower motif from a shop in Paris – it was totally in style and I managed to catch a few eye-catching dance performances while in town – the sheer energy of the people around was completely addictive, so be sure to wear something fabulous next time you visit a theatre or see a ballet performance – just like I did in 1732.

You wouldn't believe the effort it takes to even step into a brocade dress – the boning! The layers! But I did find it totally worthwhile – especially for the amount of twirls I was able to do in the dresses! So, you’ll be thrilled to hear that fashion trends can make a total comeback! Even better, a love of dance was not restricted to just theatres. Oh no! It was everywhere! People danced in the streets, in gardens, at balls...everywhere! You can’t underestimate the beauty of those times - this love for ballet permeated through every part of life, even inspiring the likes of Shakespeare with some of his dance moves! How can you beat a style and movement that inspires everyone to dance, no matter what!

It just goes to show you – ballet is truly magical – a form of expression, art, and joy that can’t be confined to just a theatre or to one type of fashion - it truly embodies a universal language of beauty and joy!

I absolutely love that 1732 was all about embracing ballet and making it accessible, as well as promoting those gorgeous, ornate designs – now that's a truly inspired way of celebrating this incredible art form, and why I, Emma, am totally aiming for us to do the same - in the modern world - one pink tutu at a time! I hope I’ve inspired you, my fabulous dancers! Now, go forth, twirl, and embrace the magic of ballet, no matter what year you find yourselves in! Let's keep spreading that ballet love!
