Pink Tutu Post #317: 1889 - A Year of Flourishing Beauty in Ballet!

Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina with a penchant for all things pink and tutu-tastic.

Today, we’re twirling back in time to 1889, a year bursting with balletic beauty and fashion that’s as captivating today as it was over a century ago. Let’s slip into our fanciest pink tutus (because, darling, they never go out of style!) and journey through the year’s exciting developments!

The year 1889 saw the birth of one of the most iconic buildings in the world: the Eiffel Tower, which rose majestically in Paris, just in time for the grand World's Fair. This fair, a dazzling showcase of global innovation and culture, served as a perfect stage for some absolutely incredible ballet performances. Imagine! Dancing under the shadow of that exquisite steel latticework. Now, that’s what I call a dream stage!

The Parisian scene was buzzing with Anna Pavlova! While still young and just breaking through, this iconic dancer would go on to become a legend, a real ballerina who captured hearts across the globe.

The great Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario who would revolutionise ballet a decade later, was busy setting the scene for his grand ballet productions. Diaghilev, an innovative visionary, would bring together the greatest dancers, choreographers, and artists of his day, putting ballet firmly on the world map.

But it wasn't just Paris that was filled with the spirit of ballet. London, the cradle of many iconic dances, buzzed with its own brand of ballet magic!

The Royal Opera House continued its prestigious reign, drawing in discerning crowds with captivating performances. Can you imagine seeing a ballet under the sparkling chandelier in the magnificent Covent Garden? A moment truly fit for a princess!

And across the pond, the world of American ballet was blossoming. The Russian Ballet, touring the States, brought with it a captivating flair that ignited a new era of ballet in America. Imagine seeing a ballet troupe straight from Russia! How magical must that have been!

Now, let's talk fashion!

The year 1889 was a delight for anyone who loved beautiful dresses. From the swirling elegance of the Princess Line gowns, featuring nipped-in waists and flowing skirts, to the dramatic romanticism of the bustle - an ever-popular style, often adorned with exquisite ribbons and laces. I can just imagine myself twirling across the ballroom floor in one of these beautiful designs.

But our focus, of course, is on the ballet world. Tutus of the era were magnificent, often created with intricate details, layers of tulle, and delicate embroidery. This period saw a beautiful evolution in ballet design, incorporating more and more elements of dramatic romanticism into the dancer’s attire, showcasing the dancer's grace and beauty even more magnificently. I am simply mesmerized by those iconic romantic ballet designs, with their airy, flowing tutus! They capture a true sense of romance, which I believe is vital to the heart of ballet!

Beyond the grand theatres and extravagant balls, the dance-loving heart could also be found in the streets. Street ballet, which is a passion I share wholeheartedly, started to become increasingly popular.

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of London or Paris, filled with the laughter and joy of street performers showcasing their incredible talent for all to see. Just as it does today! Street ballet, that magical meeting of artistry and entertainment, had its start in this beautiful era. And we can definitely be grateful for its existence, as we can see just how much impact street ballet has made in the world today.

Oh, how I wish I could travel back to 1889!

Wouldn’t it be marvelous to see these beautiful performances, to dance amongst the captivating gowns of the day? I would certainly be eager to try those lovely princess gowns, imagine! The ballet and fashion scene of 1889 would surely leave a permanent, rosy stain on my ballerina soul.

That's it for this week, darlings. Don't forget to grab your favourite pink tutus, turn on some lovely music, and dance your hearts out.

And remember, every day is a perfect opportunity to spread some ballet joy!

Yours in pink tulle,

Emma
