Pink Tutu Post #321: 1893 - A Glimpse Back in Time!

Hey my lovely tutu-ettes! Emma here, bringing you a dazzling trip back to 1893 with your favourite pink tutu guide. As a Derbyshire girl, my heart beats a little faster when I imagine myself pirouetting through Victorian England, taking in all the fabulous fashion and grand ballet performances! This week we're going to explore the beautiful world of ballet as it was almost 130 years ago. It's not all just tiaras and crinolines you know! So grab your favourite cuppa, settle into your tutu, and let's journey together…

A Peek Through The Curtains

The year 1893 saw a dazzling array of talent grace the stage. Imagine yourself nestled in the velvet-lined theatre boxes, admiring the elegant ballerinas. This year was filled with exquisite ballets like “Giselle” (which still wows audiences today!) and “The Nutcracker,” the Christmas story with that stunning sugarplum fairy scene. Sadly for us, these beauties haven’t quite reached the mainstream fame that they deserve, so consider these our ballet-insider secrets, to be savored!

The famous choreographer Marius Petipa was captivating audiences across Russia with a sensational version of “The Sleeping Beauty”, full of magical woodland scenes, swirling gowns and spectacular jumps. Can you just picture the sheer wonder of the Sleeping Beauty waking up to a prince in shimmering, romantic ballet costume?! Oh to be there with my front-row tutu!

A Swirling World of Fashion

Of course, any trip through time wouldn't be complete without a little peek at the exquisite fashion. 1893 saw some fantastic silhouettes, full of sweeping skirts and flowing sleeves! Ballerinas danced in layered tulle tutus, their elegant bodices laced tight and delicate, highlighting their every movement. If we could transport a little bit of that elegance to today's dance studios, wouldn't that be fab?! I dream of those tutus!

Imagine a full-skirted dress with lace details, maybe even some hand-sewn embellishments, worn over a flowing tutu for an ethereal look! It's a shame our current era has somewhat lost that graceful elegance, although there is an increase in street and ballet-inspired fashion for those in the know. I'd love to wear a modern interpretation of those gorgeous dance dresses – I'm certain we can blend 1893 with 2023!

The Magic of the Stage

For all those fashion and dance enthusiasts out there, think how incredible it must have been to watch ballet in a real theatre. Imagine those gaslights, illuminating the entire stage, showcasing every stunning detail. Think of those dramatic pauses as the music crescendos, all while the ballerina takes a bow! I'm always finding ways to bring those grand theatre vibes into my street performances. I just need that incredible stage and the perfect 1893 inspired pink tutu for the ultimate time-travel dance experience!

So, this week, take a little time to appreciate the history of ballet. I'm certain that if you keep your eyes on the “pink-tutu” prize, you'll find the most delightful inspirations from 1893 (and beyond!), from ballet performances to the graceful world of fashion!

Until next week my dear ballet enthusiasts! Have a wonderful time celebrating the magic of dance in your own pink tutu, no matter where you are!
