Pink Tutu News, Post 365: A 1937 Ballet Extravaganza! 🩰💖

Hello darling dancers and fashionistas! It's Emma here, your very own pink-tutu-clad historian, ready to transport you back in time! Today we're taking a trip back to a magical year in ballet, a year of vibrant colours, captivating performances, and innovative trends: 1937! Grab your favourite shade of pink, let your imagination fly, and join me as we discover the fabulous ballet world of almost a century ago!

1937 saw a flourish of ballet activity across the globe! Let's start with the Big Apple – oh, New York City, you always have a way of grabbing the spotlight!

A Ballet Bonanza in The Big Apple

The New York City Ballet was just a twinkle in its founder's eyes, but it was still a place of dazzling ballet excitement! I was absolutely entranced to see that in 1937, Leonide Massine's * "Parade" * graced the stage, with music by the sensational *Erik Satie – how fab! I couldn't wait to see what exquisite outfits the dancers were sporting for that show. Parade featured innovative set design by Pablo Picasso and a delightful, flamboyant atmosphere – something you’d want to show off your favourite pink tutu at! I imagine the crowd, all eyes glued to the stage, just like I’d be now, transported back to those exciting nights in New York City.

Paris: The Ballet Capital

The City of Lights always draws us in, and 1937 didn't disappoint. In Paris, The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo continued to capture the hearts of audiences with its breath-taking performances, with many captivating productions being brought to the Parisian stage!

Now, here's a bit of fashion news: I love how the tutus in this period were quite exquisite. Olga Spessivtseva , known for her delicate beauty and graceful presence, would have adorned the stage with some truly fabulous tutus! The 1937 Ballet Russe designs focused on long, elegant lines and intricate embroidery – quite the visual delight! I imagine a dazzling display of colours, and fabrics that flowed with every turn, adding a sense of drama and romance to the ballets.

But hold your pink tutus! I don’t think Paris was the only ballet destination this year, my dears! Let's travel further afield!

Beyond the Continent: Dance Moves Around the World!

Over in England, London’s famed Royal Opera House presented The Sadler’s Wells Ballet – with such captivating choreography by Frederick Ashton and Ninette de Valois, there were new ballets for every taste, and some simply stunning ballet shoes to admire. Oh, those pointe shoes! Every ballet dancer knows a good pointe shoe makes all the difference! The company premiered a beautiful work called * “Apparitions”, featuring designs by the talented Oliver Messel – what a collaboration!

And if you love the whimsical beauty of ballet and you are from my beautiful Derbyshire, you could catch a stunning show at the Buxton Festival that same year, featuring the graceful Margot Fonteyn, known for her beauty and incredible artistry! The festival also showcased talented new choreographers and stunning costumes. The festival is where my love of dance and history all began, right there on stage, in the glow of those enchanting spotlights.

A Fashionable Time Capsule: Ballet Couture 1937

Now, on the topic of the era’s fashion: The elegance of ballet fashion was unparalleled! From exquisite silk tutus in dreamy shades of pink and pastel blues to gorgeous ballerina shoes and beautiful hairstyles adorned with pearls and flowers – oh, just imagine it! Imagine those delicate, sparkling jewels catching the stage lights, oh, darling, that would be absolutely glamorous!

In 1937, ballet fashion embraced soft colours and luxurious fabrics! Velvet, satin, and silk, with an ethereal sheen that would truly have made the ballet dancers shimmer under those spotlight, creating the perfect backdrop for graceful movements and enchanting steps! I’ve been collecting old ballet fashion magazines, dreaming about what kind of dress I’d design for my next time-travel adventure – wouldn't it be absolutely divine?

Speaking of divine, don’t miss out on the World Ballet Gala, held at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York! Imagine that! The gala featured iconic ballet dancers such as Tamara Karsavina, the captivating Alexandra Danilova, and the graceful Leonide Massine. Serge Diaghilev was present!

My darlings, this is the true glamour! The gowns were an art form in themselves: swirling silhouettes, adorned with beads, crystals and sequins - absolutely fabulous! I think we need to create a modern day World Ballet Gala, my dear dancers, and I have just the pink tutu to wear!

A Dance through the Pages of History

1937, darling, is a year for a grand dance. With breathtaking ballet productions happening worldwide and unforgettable moments for the history books, I’d recommend going to every ballet performance you can find. There was such a sense of innovation, artistry, and glamour – all things I adore! And the fashion, oh, the fashion! Imagine walking around London, Paris, or even a Derbyshire market, with an intricate tutu swishing around you, catching the eye of everyone around – a true ballet vision, indeed!

The 1937 ballet world is a magical land that reminds us of the enduring beauty of this art form. The breathtaking artistry of these ballerinas, and those dazzling designs that graced the stages – it was just wonderful! Oh, and I couldn’t forget to mention the ballet shoes – a perfect balance of grace, elegance and beauty! I'm so grateful to have this pink-tutu-loving adventure!
