History of Ballet in 1959

Pink-Tutu.com Post #387: A Trip Through Time - Ballet in 1959!

Hey darlings! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, and today I'm whisking you away on a time-traveling escapade to the magical year of 1959! My little tutu-clad feet are practically tap-dancing with excitement because 1959 was an incredible year for the world of ballet – so buckle up, my darlings, it’s going to be a whirlwind of tulle, talent and fashion!

From Derbyshire to 1959 – Street Performance for Time Travel?

You all know my favourite way to fund my little jaunts through time is to perform a bit of street ballet. It might sound crazy, but there’s something utterly magical about twirling under the city skies, my tutu billowing in the breeze, while a coin lands in my sparkly donation box. This time, I had to perfect my take on a classical pas de deux (that's a dance for two people, dear readers!). And boy, did it make my little ballerina heart sing! People loved it, they were all captivated by the grace and energy, and I made enough for a fantastic 1959 trip, wouldn't you say?

1959 - A Year of Change and Progress in Ballet

Now, 1959 was a time of transformation in ballet! While some traditional values were still embraced, new styles and ideas began to flourish. Imagine, a little spark of revolution swirling inside the traditional ballets! Exciting, isn’t it? And of course, with any great ballet era, comes a spectacular set of performances that stole the breath of everyone who witnessed them!

Shows to See in 1959

Now, where would a pink tutu enthusiast go first, if whisked away to 1959? Well, darlings, a true ballet enthusiast would head straight to London’s Royal Opera House! Now, I know that the name has changed a little bit since then – you might know it as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden nowadays, but to me, it’ll always be Covent Garden, for it was truly the heart of the ballet world back in 1959. It was bursting with incredible shows - and let’s not forget the sensational costumes and stunning designs! Imagine seeing the likes of The Sleeping Beauty or Giselle on stage. Oh, the exquisite tutus! Those intricate details!

Now, let’s talk about another absolutely incredible theatre that was making a huge name for itself in the ballet world. The Paris Opera Ballet, yes, dear darlings, Paris Opera Ballet! They’ve been a bastion of ballet beauty since forever! The Paris Opera had a sensational production of La Bayadère in 1959. Oh my, the colours! The incredible technique of the dancers! They made the stage truly magical!

Let’s Talk Fashion!

And let's not forget about the incredible fashion trends! Tutus were becoming more elaborate, and fashion designers were pushing the boundaries with exquisite materials like tulle and lace. It was a period of real innovation and style. I was absolutely delighted to find an incredible shop on Regent Street - “Misses P.J. Harling & Co., dressmaker” . They had a lovely display of “modern frocks and evening wear" which looked absolutely gorgeous and chic! If only my pink tutus could be as perfectly-tailored and as stylish. Oh to live in a world with fashion and tutu-creativity merging at all levels.

A Pink-tutu Dream come True

1959 was a year where ballet truly blossomed. The energy was contagious, the styles were diverse, and the world felt awash in twirling tutus and flowing movements! I spent days watching shows at Covent Garden and Sadler's Wells Theatre. It was simply heavenly to watch dancers of this caliber. They truly gave their all to bring their characters to life and to showcase the true beauty and artistic prowess of this world. Oh, the passion! Oh, the movement! It's a memory that I’ll hold close for all my days to come!

My Pink Tutu Verdict?

Well, dear readers, 1959 has my absolute tick of approval. It was a magical journey through the world of ballet! From the shows and fashion, to the atmosphere and energy, 1959 offered a real window into a bygone era, while offering an exciting look towards what ballet would become in the future.

Now, who wants to go time traveling with me again, and explore even more breathtaking ballet history? Just make sure you’re ready to twirl your hearts out, because 1959 definitely gave us the perfect combination of grace, beauty, and a sprinkle of theatrical magic! Until next time, stay sparkly, stay chic and keep dancing!
