Helloooo Darlings! π π
Welcome back to my monthly adventures in time, as your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina drag queen takes you on a journey through history! This month, my magical tutu has whisked me back to June 1920 - and let me tell you, the Roaring Twenties are living up to their name!
This is blog post number 6 for www.pink-tutu.com, darlings! My magical tutu and I are thrilled to be here, so buckle up, babes, as we're about to sashay through the vibrant, glittery, and utterly fascinating world of drag from almost a century ago!
The 1920s - A Dragtastic Decade! β¨
I mean, let's face it, the 1920s were just a roaring good time for drag, right? The flapper scene was at its peak, women were cutting their hair short, skirts were rising higher, and drag queens, let's just say, were owning the scene with flair! It was a time for individuality, self-expression, and defying conventions. Imagine, a time when putting on a show was the most important thing, and the world, at least for a night, seemed a little bit more fabulous.
Fashionably Fabulous - A Pink Tutu Twist on History ππ
As you can imagine, my heart fluttered when I first arrived in 1920! The glamour of the flapper scene, the bobbed hairstyles, and those decadent sequined gowns - it's practically made for a pink tutu, don't you think? And let me tell you, there's a bit of a tutu-like feeling going on in this era, as the feminine styles became bolder and more liberated. Just look at the shorter dresses with those beautiful drop-waist lines - reminiscent of a ballerina's skirt, if you ask me! And don't even get me started on the feather boas and beading - simply divine!
The Scene: From Speakeasies to Stage Doors π€π
As soon as I landed in the bustling city streets, I headed straight to the most exciting places - the speakeasies! These secret underground clubs, where alcohol flowed and jazz music filled the air, were bursting with life. There was such a vibrant scene going on, with drag performances on the rise - truly pioneering times. Drag queens were entertaining crowds in these intimate spaces, often hidden in basements or secret locations. Think of it as a mini drag brunch, but with even more jazz!
Now, 1920 was also a crucial time for theatrical drag! Shows like βChu Chin Chowβ were huge! This oriental-themed extravaganza included a spectacular, fully-dressed drag queen performance as the villainous, yet campy, character βChu Chin Chow." This iconic show, running for nearly four years and packed with audiences, played a big part in pushing the boundaries of drag within mainstream theater. Imagine!
My Pink Tutu Journey: Making History More Fabulous! π«
I did what any self-respecting pink tutu-wearing ballerina drag queen would do, and I hopped right into the action! First, I hit the vintage shops - where else would a fashion-forward drag queen be, right? The frocks are amazing - sequins galore! I snagged myself a gorgeous sequined flapper dress and a fabulous feathered boa for a few shillings. Then, of course, I headed to the local drag scene, and boy, oh boy, it was a sight! It was like stepping back in time into a kaleidoscope of glamour. The energy was electric, the laughter contagious, and the performances captivating.
While the social climate of the era had its limitations for drag, itβs remarkable to see how it thrived. You really have to give credit to the courage and creativity of these early drag queens!
