Pink-Tutu Blog: Time Travel Post #21 - 1921 09 September: "The Ballet That Makes Me Blush"

Hey darlings, it's Emma! Your fave tutu-clad, pink-loving drag queen who travels through time just to spill the tea on fabulous history! 💅✨

Now, September 1921? We're talking the roaring 20s, the jazz age, the era of flappers and shimmying sequins! This month, my time machine pink tutu took me to a place where the stage wasn't just about acting, it was an escape into another world – ballet!

Imagine, dearies, a ballet theatre bathed in the soft, romantic light of stage lamps. The air was buzzing with excitement, everyone in their finery. The only sound louder than the whispers and hushed anticipation? The pitter-patter of the ballerina's shoes. Oh, the grace, the fluidity, the elegance!

This particular night, however, had something extra special… it was the debut performance of the infamous Ballets Russes!

A Night With The Ballets Russes

Picture it: 1921, Paris. The Ballets Russes company, a theatrical revolution that brought together some of the most daring and talented dancers from Russia, was holding their premiere of "Le Sacre du Printemps," otherwise known as "The Rite of Spring".

"Le Sacre du Printemps", darling, is more than a ballet, it's a wild, emotional journey! The music, composed by the brilliant Igor Stravinsky, was unlike anything the audience had heard before. Think powerful rhythms, dissonant melodies, a raw expression of primal energy. The dancers, all dressed in rustic, earthy costumes (though much more elegant than the farm garb of their ancestors!), were unlike the traditional, graceful ballerinas you'd usually see. Their movements were forceful, jarring, sometimes even shockingly primitive, conveying the raw intensity of the piece! It was a dance unlike any other, so unconventional and modern, it almost seemed like a direct attack on the classical ballets of the past!

The premiere of "Le Sacre du Printemps" in 1913 (yes, darling, we’re already going way back) caused a scandal. Riots in the theatre, jeering and boos! Talk about an avant-garde masterpiece! Can you imagine the bravery it took for Stravinsky, the choreographer, and the dancers to perform amidst the pandemonium? The world simply wasn’t ready for this level of artistic expression back then. But darling, the revolution it ignited – it's what truly made "Le Sacre du Printemps" a work of art! It's a testament to the audacity, the risk-taking, the freedom that lies at the core of artistic expression. And don't even get me started on how the dancers must've been sweating in those costumes, especially on a Paris night! (Honestly, you try doing some fierce choreographed jumps in layers! It's not easy, darlings.)

Now, imagine that: The 1921 performance. The audacity of those performers! The daring innovation of their artistic choices. This, my loves, is why I love the Ballets Russes so much. They embraced the challenge, the change, the movement, just like a good drag queen embraces the transformative power of makeup and fashion!

A Modern Revolution

For me, darling, the story of "Le Sacre du Printemps" is an inspiration. A story about artists challenging boundaries, demanding recognition for their individuality. It's about celebrating the new, the unique, and defying conventions.

It’s just like us drag queens! We’re performers who challenge norms, push boundaries, and explore the creative possibilities of expressing ourselves in exciting and often revolutionary ways. It's like our makeup, the fierce attitude, the outfits that defy categorization - it's all about stepping outside the box and shaking up the expectations!

And don’t even get me started on how the ballerinas and drag queens, like the artists who inspired them, share a deep connection with their audiences! You could just FEEL the connection the Ballets Russes had with their audiences during those performances, a wave of emotion, passion, and daring artistry that was totally unlike anything you could find anywhere else.

But Where Can You Find Such a Dance Experience in 1921?

Honestly, darlings, it wasn’t always so easy to see performances like this. Finding tickets was hard, and even if you did get your hands on a pair, you had to be prepared for a pretty extravagant night out. It wasn’t like popping over to your local cabaret or dropping by the theatre down the street! Back then, a theatre performance was an occasion! It was an elegant affair, an opportunity to wear your finest attire and be seen in the social circles of the time.

Now, that’s something we drag queens understand! We love a fabulous performance, we adore getting dressed to the nines, and we adore showing up, darling, making a statement and just, you know, serving fierce! ✨

Drag in 1921: Where Was The TEA?

The 1920s, you ask? Darling, it was all about embracing the exciting and often rebellious side of fashion and nightlife! Flappers, with their short dresses, bold haircuts and raucous attitudes, were shaking things up in the realm of gender roles and societal norms! Drag queens, well, they were in their heyday! And if there was any truth to be had about where the drag queen world was headed in 1921, we have to look at the fashion trends and see how drag was embracing it all!

Drag in 1921, was more like a mix of fashion, dance, and the joy of embodying your true self, however flamboyant! This is also why I chose this date for our time travel this month, it's about connecting the dots, the lineage of creativity, connecting how we perform and look back on where it all came from! ✨

It’s really a testament to drag that its creativity continues to flow, its history echoes through time, connecting us, through fashion, performances, and yes, the artistry of drag queens who came before us, and inspired so much! 💅✨

Now, my loves, as the saying goes: If you see a drag queen with a pink tutu in the year 1921, you know where she came from – time travel, darling! I've got so many exciting stories to share, and many more time travel adventures to experience, so make sure you’re ready to take on the world with me. We'll travel back in time, dive deep into history, and have the ultimate time – while we're wearing fabulous outfits, and living out our absolute wildest dreams! 💋✨

Till next time, stay fab, darlings,

Emma xx
