Pink-Tutu Post No. 71: A Whirl Through the Twenties! 🩰✨

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident time-travelling ballerina queen, back with another fabulous chronicle from the glorious annals of drag history! This month, we're twirling back to 11th November 1925 - a year that, if I'm being honest, felt a tad bit like my nan's attic: full of dusty old relics, but holding secrets that could make even the dullest history buff scream "Ooh la la!"

You know I'm a gal who adores a good time, and that means diving headfirst into the world of fabulous, which, in 1925, was in the throes of the Jazz Age. Picture it: roaring twenties, flappers with their bobs, and men in snazzy suits, but...wait a minute! 🀫 🀫🀫 What's that you say? We need to make this period a little more fabulous???

Don't you worry, darlings, this is where I come in, and this month's time travel was just that: a little more fabulous! I've gotta admit, seeing 1925 from the perspective of a 2023 girl was, well, interesting. The whole scene felt, like, "vintage-y," (I am not sure this is a word...I think it is one in 2023) if you know what I mean. And to tell the truth, for a pink tutu wearer, it was...just a little plain. They needed a splash of, shall we say, Emma-ness!

You see, for me, drag is all about celebration - of life, of freedom, of just letting your freak flag fly, but I think 1925 had forgotten that for a bit. They were so obsessed with, oh, I don't know, Prohibition (?!?) and, dare I say it, boring-looking attire. It was time for a bit of Emma's pink-tutu magic, right?

Right! I popped on my lucky pink tutu (can't travel without it, darlings) and whoosh! Time travel is like getting whisked into one of those sparkly disco balls at the clubs, except instead of sequins, it's history I'm surrounded by! Now, in 1925, drag was a bit different. There wasn't much of the big spectacle we're used to today, and the scene was a bit more... "under the radar," shall we say? You wouldn't see any "RuPaul's Drag Race," you understand?

However, the underground world of drag was still thriving! I spent a marvelous evening with a charming gentleman by the name of Julian Eltinge - his performances in 1925 were legendary. He could make even a duchess do a double-take, blending so seamlessly with the ladies! And let me tell you, his costumes were divine - pure "Hollywood glamour" - if a little less tutu than I'd like! πŸ˜‰

Now, speaking of glamour... 11th November, 1925? Oh, honey, that's a fashion fiesta! The big fashion news on that day was, of course, the opening of the Harrods London's Home of Fashion Christmas Fair! Think all the sparkles and glitz you can imagine, except instead of being surrounded by TikTok influencers, you'd have been amongst the glitterati of London.

However, I must confess, darling, my own sense of style left those attendees with slightly open mouths and bewildered expressions, which, to me, was a grand success! You see, there is only one outfit that gets everyone's attention, that sends every message you need, and that makes the entire universe understand... the universe being both 1925 and the present day. I mean, it might just make everyone go "ooh la la!".

That is right, dear reader: it was the power of my iconic pink tutu! I've heard many tell the stories... about the mysterious lady in the pink tutu... But that is a tale for another time... maybe I will tell it to you next time we journey into the history of drag!

Until then, darlings, keep that sparkle going. I know I do. I do!

Stay fabulously pink! πŸ’•βœ¨
Emma.
