Hello, darlings! Itās your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! April has sprung, the flowers are blooming, and Iām just bursting with excitement for this monthās #DragQueenHistory adventure. As you all know, my time travelling pink tutu whisks me off to some fabulous destinations every month. This time, I'm off to⦠drumroll, please⦠1927! Specifically, April 4th, 1927. Letās twirl back in time and see what fabulousness awaits!
Now, my dears, youāre probably thinking, ā1927? What could be so exciting about that?ā Well, buckle up your diamante-studded suspenders and get ready for a whirl through the golden age of drag, because 1927 was a year of ground-breaking performances, daring looks, and the beginnings of what we now know as drag! Oh, the sass!
Drag Diaries - A Glimpse into the TwentiesSo, letās start with the world, shall we? The 1920s were an era of social and artistic change, a time of revolution, where people started expressing themselves in bold new ways. Imagine flapper dresses, jazz music, and a whole lot of roaring excitement! It was, darling, an ideal climate for drag to blossom. And it did.
On the day I arrived, April 4th, 1927, the news was abuzz with news of a captivating performance at a Parisian cabaret called "Le Moulin Rouge". Oh, the Moulin Rouge! Itās practically a drag mecca! Now, my sweet readers, imagine a show featuring a chorus of "pretty girls" ā and, Iām telling you, they were prettier than the girls in my Derbyshire village! But whatās most exciting about these performances? They were entirely performed by men! Yes, men! In fabulous costumes and make-up, these trailblazers paved the way for future generations of drag queens and kings! The crowd was enthralled, and so was I. These guys weren't just dressing up - they were living and breathing drag, injecting the world with joy and theatricality. It was divine!
I spent the entire day catching snippets of gossip and enjoying the spectacle, and let me tell you, it wasnāt all glitz and glamour. The world of drag back then was, shall we say, a tad more daring, with more risque humour and costumes! Imagine a sassy chorus line with cheeky wink-wink, nudge-nudge jokes, with the occasional feather boa tossed for dramatic effect! It was such a sight for these delicate, pink tutu-wearing eyes! It was truly inspiring to witness the bravery and charisma of these early drag performers! They were truly revolutionary, challenging gender norms and bringing a sense of playful abandon to the world!
From Paris with Love⦠and Fashion!Naturally, no trip to Paris would be complete without a shopping spree! I headed to the renowned fashion house, Maison Worth, to soak in the exquisite world of couture. I must say, they were on a different level than the drapers in Derby. Imagine, my dears, hand-stitched garments, shimmering fabrics, and the most extravagant hats youāve ever laid your eyes on! I mean, they even had feathers and diamonds! Honestly, the attention to detail, it made me swoon! I snagged a beautiful pearl-encrusted clutch and some bejeweled brooches - absolute statement pieces that perfectly captured the spirit of the era. I mean, youāve got to stand out! I couldn't help but try to envision how a few of those fabulous looks could be translated to a drag performance⦠Now, this is how you make an entrance, my darlings!
Sharing the Love for DragYou know what I love most about these trips, though? Itās not the dazzling performances or the extravagant shopping ā it's the shared love for drag! Everywhere I go, I see that spirit of playfulness, self-expression, and creative flair, and it really reminds me why I started this whole time-traveling adventure. Drag isnāt just about a costume, itās a celebration of who we are and a platform to express ourselves in ways that challenge convention and bring joy to the world!
Of course, the ultimate goal, as you all know, is to get everyone wearing a pink tutu! Think about it, darlings, imagine the world if we could all embrace the power of playfulness, self-expression, and a little bit of sparkle! Itās a beautiful, joyous vision!
Thatās all from Pink Tutu Travels for this month! I'll be back with more dazzling drag history from another enchanting time next month.
