Hello my darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveler and resident drag history aficionado, reporting live from… well, wherever my pink tutu decides to whisk me off to this month!
This time, my lovelies, our time machine tutu has brought us to March 3rd, 1929! And let me tell you, it’s quite a scene! It’s almost like a scene straight out of one of those glamorous, vintage, silent films!
Oh, you thought this was going to be just about the fashion, did you, my dears? Silly sausage! Drag is all about history! So strap in for a crash course in how drag has been inspiring, captivating and rocking the world throughout history!
What's in the world of Drag in March 3rd 1929
Oh, my darlings, 1929 might seem ages ago, but trust me, drag was already slaying the world. Although we don’t know about many performers specifically from this day, drag’s history runs deeper than you think. This period was a crucial time in drag’s evolution! Think Marlene Dietrich and Josephine Baker – these ladies were shattering stereotypes and rocking the stage with their fierce fashion, defying gender norms, and inspiring the generations that followed them! Imagine the amazing artistry, the bold fashion, the fierce dance moves, the pure raw talent and theatricality! It would’ve been an absolutely spectacular era for drag, right here, right now.
We can imagine that there would have been a whole lot of cabarets and burlesque houses bursting with glamorous performances across the globe. From the smoky jazz clubs of New York to the cabaret bars of Berlin, drag performers would’ve been thrilling audiences with their incredible talent and captivating presence! Just imagine the outfits, my darlings – think glamorous flapper dresses, dazzling feather boas, and sparkly headpieces. It must have been absolutely dazzling!
My Pink Tutu Takes Me to The Grand Palais!
My, my, it was positively delightful. We travelled right into the middle of a fashionable ball in the heart of Paris, held at The Grand Palais. The grand ball, my darlings, was an annual extravaganza held to show off the very latest fashion from designers from around the world, an elegant affair with hundreds of glittering attendees. A drag performer dressed as an exaggerated version of the ‘flapper’, complete with a dazzling sequined dress, and a feather boa held aloft, performed the can-can – Oh my word, my dears! It was simply glorious to witness a style of dancing that is so inherently linked with drag culture! The can-can was the ‘Dragtastic’ move of its day and these performers were owning it – think cheeky feather boas and fishnet stockings! Oh the glamour and decadence of it all!
An evening spent shopping at Macy's in New York.
Next up, it’s time to time travel over to America and visit Macy’s, the big store in New York. And guess what? A fashion show! The windows, like today, were adorned with eye catching displays and in the store a whole host of the new lines of clothing are being presented by women models. The fashionistas are getting ready for Spring and the latest fashion trends. I would have loved to pick up a fabulous feather boa! Or a long slinky sequin dress! And how I would have loved to take in the energy of New York in the 1920s - so much hustle and bustle and an excitement that really radiates.
I must bring this era's fashion back!
But back to the present, my loves! After being inspired by all those glamorous, roaring twenties' fashions, my creativity is buzzing. Oh, this time period! I’m envisioning a truly glamorous ensemble, full of glitz and glamour, think a floor-length, shimmering sequined dress, a pair of feathered boas, some fabulously extravagant, bejeweled headwear, perhaps even a pair of stunning, glittery, silver shoes! That would surely be a showstopper in any cabaret or theater!
You all must be wondering about the source of my funding for all this glamorous travel and fabulous outfits. Why, it's simple! Drag performance, my loves! And oh, my gigs are positively phenomenal! From glitzy nightclubs to roaring live venues – I bring the house down with my flamboyant costumes and hilarious stories. People simply love it. I’m truly blessed to share my love for all things pink and fabulous, while rocking out some fabulous historical fun with them. It's all thanks to the wonderful world of drag, where imagination takes flight, where creativity takes center stage, and where our fabulous personalities shine through, reminding us all about the boundless joy that awaits us all!
Remember my dears, history is just a step away and a pink tutu away! Why not celebrate our heritage! Go out there and be brave! And most of all, never stop dreaming.
