Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing time traveller. It’s the 9th of September and I'm positively tickled to be bringing you the latest from my travels - this time, it's a trip back to the glorious 1930s!
I have to say, this journey is like stepping into a technicolour dream. Everything feels a bit more theatrical, a bit more extravagant - just the way I like it! This trip, in particular, has been inspired by the incredible performances happening on this very day back in 1930, so buckle up, loves, because we’re about to go on a fabulous trip down memory lane…
Now, darling, let’s rewind the clock. September 1930 was a time of jazz, flapper dresses, and a growing fascination with the burgeoning art of "drag," though not in the same way we know it today, obviously. Think flamboyant theatrical performances, rather than the polished, dazzling queen-dom we see now.
I arrived in my dazzling, time-travelling, pink tulle tutu and found myself in a whirlwind of vintage fashion, bustling streets, and the heady scent of jazz music wafting from smoky speakeasies. Oh, darling, this time period had such a glamorous sense of theatre and decadence. The way everyone was dressed! And, darling, did I mention the hats?! The headpieces alone would make a modern queen jealous.
Imagine a glamorous cocktail lounge, with patrons adorned in dazzling suits and glittering gowns. It was truly divine. I must tell you, this 1930s world was like a glamorous, glittery, glittering, shimmering wonderland. I popped into one of the trendiest bars, my pink tutu attracting glances. Imagine my excitement when I saw a show about to begin - two men taking the stage. This wasn't your average pub singalong - these were dancers with theatrically exaggerated features, pulling off captivating performances.
And oh, darling! You won't believe the makeup. They had elaborate eyebrows, lips painted with dramatic, vibrant colours, and cheeks kissed with a bright rouge. This era of performance certainly embraced the theatricality of drag, didn't it? The costumes! Oh, darling, they were works of art. They're truly inspired me for my upcoming set, "Tutus Through Time" - prepare to be blown away by shimmering silk, daring silhouettes, and yes, my signature pink tutu will make an appearance!
Now, my journey wasn’t solely limited to nightclubs and glamourous settings. The sheer artistic talent in this period is unbelievable, from the groundbreaking works of the surrealist artists to the roaring development of the jazz scene. The passion for entertainment and performance really shined through in all forms. Imagine, darling, even a simple, quiet picnic on a beautiful, sunny day was a scene full of elegance and charm.
I was lucky enough to bump into a delightful group of gentlemen, a truly sophisticated bunch, who treated me to a cup of tea at their local cafe. It was fascinating learning about the theatre scene, their favourite stage shows, and hearing tales of a local dancer who captivated audiences with their daring costumes and daring attitude. He's the kind of queen we can truly aspire to - defying conventions, pushing boundaries, and demanding attention.
Their conversation took me right back to my Derbyshire roots, reminding me of the strong sense of community and theatre we enjoy here in England. Our local shows have always been a staple for me, filling me with joy, a sense of togetherness, and the inspiration to be my own true self. I can see why they resonated with these 1930s chaps - the need to gather and celebrate, express and entertain, was just as strong then as it is today.
And, my dear lovelies, you won’t believe what I found at the local vintage store - a gorgeous feather boa in the most glorious shade of pink. It’s practically screaming "Emma, add me to your next show!" Darling, I know, right?! This trip has really set me off on a vintage shopping spree. The 1930s really embraced the fun of bold fashion. I must get myself a beaded gown, perhaps with a sequin or two. This trip is reminding me that the essence of drag is about having fun, playing with costumes and embracing a bit of escapism, all while celebrating creativity and artistic expression.
After this whirlwind trip, I'm left buzzing with a newfound appreciation for the pioneering spirits of those who dared to express themselves in such daring and creative ways, paving the way for all the glorious queens who strut and shine today. Remember darlings, as we see all these fantastic costumes and styles on stage, the beauty of drag is about pushing those boundaries and creating an unforgettable show.
So, darlings, get your glitter, embrace your true selves, and let’s all get out there and strut in our own unique styles - whether that be on a local stage, a busy street, or just with friends and family. Because, darling, remember: Life’s a stage and every single one of us is a star! And you know what? Every star is fabulously unique and ready to shine!
My latest show, "Tutus Through Time," will be opening soon at the fabulous Starlight Club, and darling, trust me when I say this performance will take you on a truly transformative journey of all things fabulous, including those sensational costumes and those delicious feather boas!
