*Hello, my dears, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! This month, Emma's magical pink tutu whisks us right back to May 5th, 1933. Let's shimmy through time to a very special year - one that saw a whole new era of glam shimmering onto the world's stage! *
The Year of the Glittering Twenties...Continued?
Oh, darlings, you wouldnât believe what was going on in the world of drag just a little over ninety years ago. 1933 was a bit of a rollercoaster year for the entire world, but even during hardship, our community continued to express themselves in fabulous and glittering fashion.
* The World Is A Stage *
Back then, theaters were alive with some incredible acts! The era of vaudeville and music hall still reigned supreme. You'd see talented performers in glittering outfits, tap-dancing their way into the hearts of the audience or doing daring acrobatics high above the stage. And amongst this incredible spectacle? Why, a healthy dose of drag performers who turned heads with their charisma and fabulous flair. Drag was about creating fantasy and escaping into a world where imagination reigned supreme.
Our Drag Queen Time Machine Stops Off In⌠Manhattan
This month, we land right in the heart of the bustling and fabulous city of New York. A must-see on the entertainment circuit would be The Village Vanguard - the very same club that became a mecca for legends like Judy Garland, Billie Holiday and even Joan Rivers. Itâs a true legend in the history of show business! Youâd find performers strutting their stuff and making New Yorkâs hottest crowds go wild. And while this specific date was still quite early for transvestite acts in the Vanguard, the club itself played host to the pioneers who would set the scene for the iconic queens of later generations. Itâs not too much of a leap of the imagination to think a pink-tutu-wearing ballerina was out there, dazzling New York back in 1933.
*Chicago: A City Of Drag Kings And The Art of Camouflage *
Now, darling, we must venture to Chicago! Chicago was a bustling and flamboyant centre for nightlife in those days. There were a multitude of dance halls, and many saw the arrival of "drag kings" who would perform with a sense of wit and a pinch of cheek. The âladiesâ were incredibly smart and very discreet about performing their art. While women werenât supposed to be out smoking, drinking, or having a good time alone at night in public, theyâd often be seen stepping out dressed as men to blend into the crowds and do exactly that! Just picture this: youâre out in Chicagoâs fabulous dance halls, shimmying the night away, when all of a sudden you spy an incredibly handsome fella, rocking an impeccably sharp suit. But there's something justâŚoff about himâŚ
A Word From Emmaâs Wardrobe - Think Sharp, Tailored and A Little Bit âMasculine Chicâ
Now, I wouldn't want to bore you with the âwhat ifs" and âcould havesâ of drag during this period. But, I love the way these queens were creating a world for themselves and doing it with such charm. It shows me the sheer talent of dressing up as someone else - and nailing it! I'm quite obsessed with the way these queens made fashion an element of a completely different identity. If youâre dreaming of rocking the "drag king" look - imagine sharply tailored suits, bold hats, and perhaps a tiny touch of feminine sparkle. Remember to embrace a confident strut - because with the âkingâ persona, it's all about powerful moves and an empowering presence.
