Pink Tutu Travels: A Time Travel Through Drag! Post #168 - 12th December 1933

Oh, darlings, gather round and let's step back in time! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina, back with another fabulous voyage through the glorious world of Drag Queen History!

This month, we're setting our sequins sparkling in the glamorous, glittering, and undeniably dramatic December of 1933! I tell you, darlings, the world of drag was positively buzzing! So, grab a cuppa, put on your favourite lip colour, and get ready to twirl back in time!

My sparkly pink tutu (which, as always, is oh so very fabulous - a perfect pink with shimmering silver stars, natch) zipped me right into New York City, the heart of the roaring 20s, or, in our case, 1933! And you know what I found? Well, I found drag was really booming, with venues like the Cafe Carlyle in full swing.

Now, let's take a little trip to a Parisian cafe on this very day - a fabulous little den known as "Le Chat Noir"! This place was positively throbbing with excitement. The Cafe Carlyle's got nothin' on "Le Chat Noir!" Imagine it - this darling cafe was absolutely jam-packed with patrons wanting to be entertained by the fabulous performances by talented Drag performers. I tell you, this cafe was full to the brim! Can you imagine, honey? Oh, you just had to be there, but thank goodness my magical pink tutu has the most fabulous "freeze" function! I can watch these shows again and again, never growing tired.

You know, darlings, it's a little bittersweet looking back on this time - before television took centre stage and changed everything! Back in 1933, drag was truly something to be seen - the theatre was the place to be for a sensational drag show. People couldn’t wait for the opportunity to have a fabulous time! You really had to get out there, dress up in your finery, and be ready for a good time! And as an avid dancer, I'm just thrilled to see that dance shows were hugely popular!

Now, imagine it - a show at a nightclub full of fantastic costumes and even better routines! I saw so many fantastic shows and performers. I don't know about you, darlings, but for me, there’s truly nothing more breathtaking than a well-executed stage show! Especially a ballet routine. My time travel blog just wouldn’t be complete without a mention of this year’s best of the best.

12th December, 1933: * "Le Chat Noir," Paris: Imagine it – a whole cafe dedicated to showcasing drag! Oh, how I dream of a place like that! It was filled with talented Drag artists who truly stole the show with their performances!
* “Cafe Carlyle,” New York City: Oh, New York was simply booming! A big, juicy apple with delicious bite! This little darling cafe was known for its cabaret, so you just know drag performances were filling the room!

And now, darlings, I must dash, my time travel diary is begging to be filled. My sparkly pink tutu has just finished sewing a batch of gowns and they need to be given a whirl, and as I always say, darlings, someone has to make sure we're all living our best glamorous lives! I’ve got a performance coming up later and need to practise my "en pointe" routine!

Until next month, stay fabulous, darlings, and don't forget to grab your very own pink tutu. Pink is always the answer.

Love,

Emma
