Post #181: Back in Time and All That Glitters is Pink - January 1st, 1935

Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, reporting live from... well, the year 1935 to be precise. Can you believe it? The start of a new year, and I'm already whisked away to a whole new era! Isn’t time travel the most fabulous thing?

Now, before I get lost in the magic of the past, let's talk about how I got here. As usual, my trusty pink tutu and a bit of glitter dust whisked me off on a journey into the past. You see, every month, I have to get my fix of history – and what better way to do it than by reliving it myself?! This month, the date was January 1st, 1935, so it's a brand-new year in the glamorous world of 1930s fashion.

You know I adore the history of drag – from the old vaudeville shows, to the legendary balls, to the glorious underground scene. And what’s better than seeing the scene with my own two eyes? Trust me, darlings, experiencing a different era isn’t about the sparkly gowns and dramatic makeup - although they are lovely, obviously. It's about soaking up the culture, understanding the influences, and discovering how it shaped the dazzling scene we enjoy today.

And today, on this lovely January day, the world is brimming with drag performances and a bubbling nightlife scene.

The Roaring Twenties are Gone, but the Party Never Stops!

Even though the 'roaring twenties' are a thing of the past, 1935 still pulsates with the thrill of drag performance! While some may say it's a quieter era compared to the freewheeling twenties, that simply isn't true. Drag still shines in many corners of the globe!

For one, Paris is the place to be for cabaret! The Folies Bergère, a Parisian institution, is as popular as ever. I snuck into a performance by the Le Trio Electrique, and I can assure you it was absolutely spectacular! Think lavish costumes, mesmerizing choreography, and electrifying musical acts. Absolutely breathtaking, darling!

While I didn't quite catch the performance in all its glory – I did peek from a backstage corner - my curiosity for the world of drag pushed me to sneak out in search of a legendary show known as Madame Arthur. Nestled in the Montmartre district of Paris, it's a haven for all things drag and one of the first gay clubs in all of Paris. Talk about history in the making! I heard whispers of captivating shows featuring talented drag performers, like Mistinguett, who was captivating audiences back in the 1920s and had transitioned to Broadway by 1935, making her a legend for many years to come!

London's Secret Soirée

Then, we've got London! It seems a quiet night, but behind closed doors, secret soirees are in full swing. If you can manage to get past the doorkeepers, the private clubs, particularly the ones found in Soho, will host some dazzling performances by glamorous drag artists. Imagine being a fly on the wall, listening to jazz and enjoying the laughter of those in the know! Sadly, I didn't manage to secure an invitation, but I did stumble upon a group of drag queens, sporting impeccable makeup and sharp suits. It seemed they were preparing for a party for a select group of people! I could tell this was something special, so naturally, I followed the trail of laughter, glamour, and maybe a hint of mischief!

The truth is, darlings, drag continues to be a vibrant and dynamic force across the globe. Even if the glitter isn't as bright in every corner, the joy and freedom of expression remain constant, a legacy that will continue to inspire us all.

Pink Tutu Inspirations

From Paris to London, one thing remains the same: these incredible performers radiate charisma, grace, and a dash of sparkle, reminding us that fashion can be more than just clothes. It’s an art form.

Remember that vintage glamour that shines from every corner of this era? Let's take a page from their style book. Let's talk ballet! It’s a real fashion inspiration for this era, particularly the ballerina shoes that we all know and love! In 1935, ballet shoes are a staple for both fashionable ladies and those brave enough to perform in drag. Think sleek, pointed footwear and a hint of lace – darling, these are all details I love to incorporate into my drag looks. The colours are always so stunning – pale pinks and soft blues, absolutely beautiful!

You know, those little pink satin shoes give you all the elegance, that slight lift, and they match perfectly with my signature pink tutu, so it's a real fashion win! I always have a pair tucked away in my travelling trunk – who can say no to a good pair of shoes?

The World of Drag in 1935: It's Alive!

Of course, my darling, I can't just go time-travelling without mentioning the events and milestones happening worldwide! This era is brimming with creativity, and drag is certainly not missing from that picture!

As we kick off the new year, the world of entertainment is a kaleidoscope of talents. Remember Sophie Tucker, the iconic drag performer and a true icon of the 1930s, still on tour! That legendary voice, the sassy outfits, and the bold stage presence - those were all the hallmarks of this amazing woman who showed us that a drag queen is more than just an entertainer, it's a powerhouse!

And it wasn't just stage shows. 1935 brought another incredible development in the world of drag - the first edition of The Drag Magazine! This was published by a talented lady named Marilyn Monroe, an incredible drag queen, photographer, and artist. She saw an opportunity to document the unique experiences of drag and showcase the incredible talent out there. It's something I'd be incredibly proud to pick up if I were in 1935. The photographs inside are a testament to the power of self-expression through drag!

More than Just Fashion!

While fashion and glamour might take center stage, it’s important to remember that history isn’t just about fancy outfits! This era brought its share of struggles, and I don’t mean just figuring out how to put on that perfectly-angled feathered headdress. The fight for LGBTQ+ rights, though not always on the forefront, remained constant, fueled by hidden gatherings and the secret networks that helped people live their truths. This is another layer of the story that's important to understand and honour, even as we celebrate the fabulous side of drag history.

Even in times of hardship, drag continues to provide a sanctuary, a place to celebrate individuality, and defy norms. In that respect, the story of drag is an eternal story, forever changing, yet forever present, just like our ever-lasting love for the pink tutu!

So, that's it from me, darlings! This incredible journey into 1935 is already over. Until next month, stay glamorous and keep those tutus twirling!

And as always, I leave you with a bit of advice – remember, darling, a pink tutu can always take you where you need to go!

Love, Emma xxx
