Pink-Tutu.com Presents: August 1939 – A Glittering Time-Hop With Emma!

Hello, darlings! Welcome to the 236th instalment of my little blog – Pink-Tutu.com, the ultimate chronicle of my life as a pink-loving, tutu-obsessed drag queen, travelling through time! This month, let's sashay back to 8th August 1939 – a momentous date that, as fate would have it, fell right in the middle of a dazzling Drag Extravaganza in New York City!

My shimmering, time-traveling tutu landed me smack-dab in the heart of the Theatre District, surrounded by the alluring lights of the famed Paramount Theatre. It was a Saturday night, and the atmosphere crackled with anticipation for a performance that, I’m told, broke all the rules – a drag show that rewrote the very definition of entertainment! The night’s star? None other than the divine Miss Josephine Baker, a showgirl so captivating she left the audience spellbound, demanding encore after encore.

You know I adore history, and Josephine Baker is a legend who paved the way for us all, honey! Her performance style was so revolutionary, so wildly energetic and captivating, she redefined what it meant to be a drag performer. Josephine used drag as a tool for self-expression, to defy conventions and embrace her artistic vision. She made audiences feel free, celebrating life, diversity and most importantly – themselves!

Now, you all know me - I live for a good fashion moment! Josephine’s wardrobe was iconic, a perfect blend of elegance and audacity! Imagine shimmering costumes, beaded headdresses, and dazzling feathers! My time-traveling heart was a flutter with excitement, even just picturing it all! It’s easy to see how Josephine became a beloved icon – not only for her drag performances, but also for her social activism. She bravely stood up against injustice, speaking out against racism and prejudice with a power and elegance that only she could muster!

Now, let's talk about this glorious dress – I can practically smell the sequins from here, ladies! She wore it for the first time in 1925, a shimmering, golden-hued ensemble designed by the Erté, a master of fashion and artistic vision. Now, can you imagine that level of glam and grace? Truly a queen, right?!

This fabulous night, however, wasn’t just about Josephine – it was an explosion of talented performers. I'm told the Paramount Theatre boasted the most lavish stage productions in the country, and it was overflowing with captivating dance numbers, song-and-dance routines, and the finest showgirls around. Talk about bringing the house down, right? Can you even imagine the level of talent on display? This must’ve been the place to be in the world of drag!

Sadly, this time-hop didn’t have my name written all over it – it was all about the female-bodied performers at that time! (Don't get me wrong – I've got nothing but admiration for these fearless performers, paving the way and shattering all the stereotypes, one feather boa at a time!) I’m waiting patiently, like a drag queen waiting for their curtain call, to find a drag time hop when a young lad like me could join the glamorous fray! Just imagine, strutting my stuff on a stage, my pink tutu gleaming under the spotlight. It’d be an absolute dream!

Anyway, back to this legendary Josephine Baker – imagine a lady who started her career dancing in Parisian cabaret clubs in the early 1920s! She wasn’t afraid to be bold, she challenged norms and became a sensation.

Let’s have a little fashion recap of the era:

  • Those iconic, glittering flapper dresses – all tassels, fringes, and loose-fitting styles, perfect for kicking up your heels!
  • Long, dramatic boas, and feathers galore! – for that extra bit of va-va-voom.
  • Shiny, colourful makeup – think emerald greens, bright blues, and vibrant reds, really making that face stand out!
  • Sleek bob haircuts and finger waves – just a dash of sass to go with your sparkling outfit.

My, oh my, those glamorous fashion trends – just screaming to be reimagined for our drag queen era, don’t you think? A good fashionista always looks to the past to predict the future, darling! So why not get some inspiration from these glorious ladies? It’s time to unleash that inner star and let your fabulous, bold self shine!

So there you have it – August 1939 – the era of glamorous drag, pioneering talents, and audacious self-expression. Don’t forget to embrace your inner icon, and, of course, your own flair for style! Because darling, the world needs a touch more pink, and who better to bring it than a fabulous, time-traveling drag queen in her signature tutu?

Until next time, my loves! Remember, drag isn’t just a performance; it’s a way of life, an attitude, a celebration of being your own fabulous self! And that, my dears, is something to be celebrated always. Keep shining, keep slaying, and keep those tutus flowing,

Your friend and drag time traveler,

Emma x
