Darlings, gather round! Your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling drag queen, Emma, is back with another juicy slice of Drag Queen History. This month, we’re swirling our way back to February 2nd, 1940! And trust me, pet, this was a time when the world was absolutely brimming with glitter, fabulousness, and, of course, DRAG!
Right, grab your feather boas and pour yourselves a nice cuppa – we’re going on an adventure!
From Derbyshire to the Heart of the Blitz
Let's rewind to the 1940s, a period known for the devastation of the Second World War. Despite the shadow of conflict, the spirit of drag continued to shine brightly – because, darlings, what could stop us? It certainly wasn’t bombs!
Now, back in my hometown of Derbyshire, the drag scene wasn't quite what it was in London or New York. But don’t you worry, my dear, there was a spirit of glamour even in the heartland of England! We were all pulling out our feather boas and most dramatic frocks for those wartime social evenings.
And, I can tell you, this February, things were extra dramatic! The London Blitz was raging on – air raid sirens wailed throughout the night, people huddled in bomb shelters, and, let’s be honest, it was terrifying!
But through the gloom, we find sparkle!
Despite everything, drag continued. In London, drag queens found refuge in wartime cabaret clubs. These intimate spaces were bursting with energy, music, and laughter.
Now, imagine it: dim lighting, a smoky haze, a singer belting out wartime tunes…and on the stage, queens serving look after look in feathered frocks, high-heeled boots, and those iconic blonde bouffants! They were bringing light and entertainment to people in dire need of a giggle, a good dance, and a brief escape from the grim realities of war.
Our Star of the Night: A Truly Glamorous Diva
But our spotlight shines this month on one of the biggest stars of 1940s London Drag – a true goddess named Lily Langtry. Now, Lily was not only known for her talent but also for her breathtaking fashion sense. Her outfits were all about that high-drama elegance: lavish costumes, luxurious gowns, shimmering sequins, and an arsenal of feathered fans. Imagine her gliding across the stage, singing in a sultry, smoky voice! And darling, her performances were a blend of humour and sass, bringing that dose of delightful chaos to the hearts of everyone watching.
Finding the Light in Darkness
I think we can all learn something from Lily’s resilience during those tough times. Despite the darkness, she chose to spread light, laughter, and glamour! I’ve always been a firm believer that no matter what the world throws at us, there's always a reason to dust off our sequined gowns, sashay down the street, and paint our faces with bright, beautiful colours.
So, whether you're a seasoned drag enthusiast or simply a curious newbie, I encourage you to embrace this message: Drag isn't just about clothes and makeup; it’s about celebrating our true selves and finding a bit of sparkle in our everyday lives.
Now, my darling dears, a bit of a pop quiz!
Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about the time-travelling potential of a good old-fashioned tutu? Did you know that Lily Langtry wasn’t only a star on stage, but she was a huge influence on ballet fashion? Or did you find yourself searching the internet to find your next Drag show to see?!
Well, until next month, keep dancing, keep dazzling, and always, always, be yourself! Oh, and maybe take a moment to think about what truly sparkles to you… Because sometimes, that inner light is all you need to ignite a party!
With love and a flurry of sequins,
Emma xox
