Pink Tutu Time Travel: A History of Drag – Episode #247: 1940 – 07 July - Ooh La La, The Big Apple!

Hiya darlings! Your favourite time travelling ballerina queen, Emma, back again with another pink tutu filled adventure through the fabulous history of drag! Get ready to fan those sequins and grab your feather boas, it’s time to sashay back to the roaring forties!

It's the 7th of July, 1940, and believe me, the world’s spinning, honey! War is raging in Europe, and yet, just like our glorious community, the spirit of drag refuses to be silenced. Today we’re taking a glamorous trip to the Big Apple itself, New York City!

Now, you might be surprised to know that while wartime wasn’t easy, drag continued to thrive. While we might not have those fabulous glamorous photographs to capture the moment, the spirit of drag lived on. The drag scene was thriving in underground clubs, clandestine venues, and tucked away behind velvet curtains. It was a refuge, a space to express yourself and find your tribe amidst the chaos.

Can you imagine strutting down a New York street, tutu swishing and feathers swaying in your pink, feathered extravaganza, darling? That was probably the image these fabulous drag queens were channeling in the speakeasies of 1940s NYC! Now that’s a performance I wanna see!

Oh, and remember darlings, our time machine – my glorious pink tutu - only takes us to dates, not places! It's like those old-fashioned time-turner necklaces from the movies.

This brings us to a fun fact I found about 1940! Can you believe, darling, there were over 100 active drag venues in NYC! These were your secret havens for drag, like whispers on the breeze – places to let your true self shine and connect with other glamorous souls. Now, let’s rewind that fabulous time travel dial, back to present-day Derbyshire.

Speaking of the present, I’ve got a whole queue of drag shows lined up to fund my next time-travel escapade. Honestly, there’s nothing quite like seeing talented queens strutting their stuff, serving those looks, and letting their talent speak volumes! I love spotting those intricate details, those sassy struts, and the undeniable charisma on stage. That's the magic of drag, and it truly does have the power to transport you to another time and place. Just like my pink tutu, drag itself is a timeless journey of self-expression and individuality.

There's an amazing drag show coming to Nottingham on Friday night, the 'Pink Palace'. They have these stunning themed drag shows that are all the rage in Derbyshire, darling. This one is a ‘Queens of Disco’ special. Oh, honey, you can’t miss it! If you're on a budget, try a DIY dance night! Dust off that sequined top, find those flamboyant heels and blast some tunes. A good dance-off with your mates can be the perfect way to spend an evening channeling those fabulous drag vibes.

Don’t forget, darlings, keep up with me every month on my little corner of the web at www.pink-tutu.com! My pink tutu has already travelled to dozens of fabulous moments in drag history, and who knows what stories it’ll reveal next month? But darling, it all begins with a pink tutu, doesn’t it?

I can’t wait to share our next adventure in the glorious world of drag! Until then, remember to embrace your true self, dance your heart out, and rock those fabulous tutus!

Until next time darlings, stay fabulous, and don't forget, it's always better in pink!

Much love,

Emma
