Darlings, how’s my little divas? Your Emma here and oh my giddy aunt, I have just arrived from 1941, and let me tell you, what a trip it was. I love going back in time; It’s all so dramatic, so extra - I can really go all out on the fabulousness and it really inspires my drag; it makes my looks just explode.
I can already see you, my lovelies, sitting with your little phones, your little sips of cocktails or mugs of tea (with extra scones please), soaking it up. Don't forget, if you’ve got questions on my drag journey - or you’re wondering about your own drag journeys and where you fit into history; where it all began, let me know. Just pop a message in my little inbox at pink-tutu.com, and I'll absolutely try and get back to you. Darling, there is so much to talk about, it's hard to know where to start - you know me, I’ve so much to tell you about this month's little excursion. I’ll take a deep breath now to get myself prepared.
It’s all a bit blurry now because the energy is still buzzing and popping like champers. So, let me just tell you - 1941. WOW. The war was just about to really begin in earnest and everything was so serious. In Europe, that's, y’know, right in our little neck of the woods darling.
But don't you worry my beauties. You’ve got Emma and this fabulous pink tutu. Oh, this one’s a real stunner too - just think Marilyn Monroe; it has got to be THE perfect pink, you know, that little off white that makes the pink POP, Darling. The skirt, oh my god, it's all billowing, like dancing to the Beatles ( well maybe it wasn’t that precise back then, darling – let’s be realistic but I've been wearing my 1941 tutu lots, trust me). I love wearing it out in the West End honey – what’s it going to be for you darlings. I want everyone to go for a pink tutu. Just go for it, let it be fun. No pressure darling, we all gotta find our inner confidence. Don’t you think that is just so beautiful, and divine. Don’t even get me started on my feather boa; it’s been on a couple of wild trips with me, but this month, oh darling, it was simply stunning in 1941! Just imagine black feathers , huge with a little pop of fuchsia. Oh. My god, you need to come on my little Pink Tutu Trip, darling.. Let’s talk about drag, let’s talk about life. It’s my joy to do that, to make a connection.
You know how it works honey. I travel with my trusty pink tutu and do show after show – my darlings are amazing, absolutely incredible. I love to perform; I love my divas who are out there living their truths living their best lives, I really love my job darling – but that's a bit more about me. Back to 1941. I love a bit of time travelling in pink, and of course I have been back on Pink Tutu.com, you see darling, it’s where my heart is. It is all there in every little detail and don’t you dare tell me this little blog is not a big deal for a little Derbyshire girl from a very small village – it is, honey, It IS, let’s just get it right between us – don’t even start.
And you know, this is only the second of February – can you believe it – well, not really believe honey, it is time travel, but this is the date. Let’s just settle this one now, it's my job, it’s my purpose my dream.
Anyway, the world in 1941, darling. It was the start of all that awful, terrible business in Europe – I hate the war! It just brings out all of that nasty, nasty human stuff. And it was everywhere; it really spoiled everything. It really does put all of our little worries into perspective, you know; all those little fashion worries – do you think I need more pink feather boas, am I wearing this lipstick the right way or should I get my nails done - they were nothing, honey, just nothing in 1941. We need to live our best lives , I know darling. But all of those concerns? They're tiny compared to war. It makes me think; It makes me think more.
Of course, the war is still on the minds of a lot of people today darling – you know there’s just this deep sense of sadness – the way those little innocent children had to be sheltered from this horrible war. We are just lucky to be able to do our thing. You know, like go for our lunches to the theatre, see a show – like Cats (the one with Andrew Lloyd Webber darling ) – but back then, they’d be just worried about getting home, and that they did make it back home.
And so much of what is happening now; you know the big news events and that’s my heart – just makes you think of the bigger picture, darling, of where you fit in, what you can do – it is about sharing it’s about kindness, caring , it’s absolutely about giving back. And don’t even think for a moment about getting down darling, the war might be bad news – but this is all about us coming together, it’s absolutely brilliant.
You know I think drag is the best form of resilience. We take those troublesome moments in our life and turn it round, into something beautiful. You’ve got to think about all the brave performers – they’re still getting their stuff out there.
But I’ve got to tell you, it was so difficult for those drag queens in 1941; it’s such an amazing feat, I think it is inspiring, to really be proud of yourself and stay true to your heart. Just to hold on to your pride, your love for what you do when it's just impossible, and everyone wants to crush you. You know what I’m talking about.
Don’t ever let anyone take away your spirit, you've got to stand tall, like one of my fabulous feather boas darling– a little bit of Pink Tutu spirit, you need it. It's about doing what you love, love it with your whole being. Because if you can't be * yourself, you *can't be brilliant– and we want everyone to be brilliant. We want everyone wearing a pink tutu.
Let’s talk more about 1941. There is a lot to say, about that date darling, it’s so dramatic. And everything about this period, all the music – the glamour, the fascinating fashions, that’s all so fun to go back to, to immerse yourself in, to let it all sink in. I can still see it. Oh my god darling, just try this, take your imagination out on the town and go to the biggest ballroom you can find, dress it up, and have yourself a little pink tutu night darling. Think Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, it’s all so glamorous it's like a whole new world – or a new look. And this is only the second of February darling.
Of course I’ve been performing all through January. You’re not getting a monthly post for nothing. But I was out there living my best life, doing the biggest shows, meeting my little darlings, dressing up like we all do - I mean how can you be any other way darling. And oh you should know, there’s so much to see, do, talk about. I love to meet all those little stars.
Don’t you love to get your fashion on. And of course Pink Tutu com, is where you can find my favourite pink tutu posts – you know those posts that get me inspired, and you can absolutely use these to create your own looks, to make it all your own, and just remember to have fun. But anyway darling, what have we got in our pink tutu today – it is time to share my Pink Tutu Thoughts.
Oh my god darling, drag. Just remembering how extravagant, how special drag was, in 1941! Imagine. I love those shows. You can absolutely see them, in your head if you try, the costumes – they were beautiful, all those fabulous shows, so special. You know they are doing something right - and we should always be proud of our heritage, of our history.
Oh darling the costumes in 1941, I’ve never seen so many tutus, so many feather boas in my life. You can just imagine the drama and excitement. I have been performing in a lot of theatres all over the world, in those wonderful big ballrooms, it is a thing of beauty, a wonderful escape. If you want to take a pink tutu trip into the past, it’s a beautiful journey. It's important to have dreams and hope, that something special will come along and change our lives. It’s what we do as a community.
There’s no real way to explain this to anyone darling, who doesn't know it is real and it is all around us. We are all part of this, of the community. That's what I want to say about drag. It’s fabulous, it's amazing - but we have got to look back, learn, cherish it, support it, it’s so worth it, darling. You know I feel that. It just is and that’s all.
And if you have a pink tutu on right now honey – let it sing, let it tell your story, and let me know. Pop over to pink-tutu.com and give me a little message about where you have been, what you have seen, we’ll create a little community together, I promise. You are a queen, honey, just believe in yourself.
So now it’s time to wrap this one up darling. And don’t forget to check out pink-tutu.com, have a good time hon, have a look around, let it take you to a happy place – a little dreamland where all the tutus are pink. Don’t forget your feather boa. Oh and let me know where you want to go next.
