Darling dears! Emma here, your fabulous friend from Derbyshire and your one-stop shop for all things pink tutu! This month we're taking a little trip back in time, to the glorious year of 1945! I've slipped into my shimmering, sequined pink tutu, hopped aboard my magical time travelling wardrobe, and we're whisking ourselves back to the exciting world of drag in a time of wartime hope.
Oh darlings, imagine the excitement! The war in Europe had just ended, and the world was gearing up for a whole new era. And wouldn't you know it, drag was a HUGE part of that! While the news of peace was ringing out across the globe, our fabulous friends on the drag scene were also breaking new ground and captivating audiences.
A Pink Tutu Through The Pages of History
You see, back in the '40s, the world of drag was still a rather secret, underground affair. But let me tell you, our fierce foremothers weren't about to let a little thing like secrecy stop them! Drag balls were popping up in secret locations all over the US, filled with glam, glitter and outrageous costumes that would make even the most seasoned drag queen blush.
Of course, drag wasn't limited to balls back then. Think glamorous cabaret shows with feather boas and top hats! And don't even get me started on the incredible burlesque scene, complete with glittering pasties and risqué routines! It was truly an era where our drag forefathers were fearless pioneers, paving the way for us to be able to strut our stuff in such a confident and visible manner today!
Time Travelling Through The Glamour of New York
Now, the city of New York was the real epicentre of this fabulous scene. Drag balls were a key part of Harlem nightlife, where some of the biggest legends of the time were crafting their stage presence and challenging the status quo. Imagine a glittering spectacle of drag performers in fabulous gowns, high-stepping through a world of beauty, grace, and liberation, all under the starry skies of New York City.
In fact, if you're thinking of joining me in this pink tutu journey to New York, 1945, we have to pay a visit to a little joint called the "Rainbow Room" - it was practically the headquarters for some of the biggest names in drag! And while I've got you on this little time travel adventure, let's go ahead and pop into the glamorous âVillage Vanguard,â and âThe Blue Angelâ. These were some of the most famous clubs in New York back then, full of top performers like the iconic, fabulous Josephine Baker - now, if you don't know her, let me tell you, you have a lot to learn about the pioneers who laid the groundwork for us to live our fullest, glammest, pink-tutu-est lives!
The Heart Of The World's Most Glamorous Show: Paris
Hold on to your sequins, darlings! Our journey isn't finished yet. Letâs hop across the pond, to the City of Lights, Paris. Now, as we all know, Paris has always been a hotbed for the arts, and that's even more true of the '40s, especially the world of drag. While New York was busy building a vibrant underground scene, the city of Paris was bursting with drag artists of all styles, with theatre performances taking centre stage. From avant-garde to cabaret, the Paris scene was just oozing with creativity and style!
So, let's step into the world of cabaret shows like "Le Chat Noir," and "Le Moulin Rouge". These establishments were hotbeds for creativity, where fabulous drag performers captivated audiences with their extraordinary acts, featuring stunning costumes, dazzling dance numbers, and some seriously campy comedy! I swear, the energy back then must have been absolutely electric, and I just bet these performances were as cutting-edge then as they are today!
And the fashions, darlings! Imagine beautiful gowns adorned with sparkling beads and delicate feathers. I wouldnât be surprised to see these incredible shows filled with a sprinkle of pink! Donât forget those glamorous hats and stunning shoes - just so stylish and sophisticated! Imagine yourself in one of those gowns, sashaying your way onto the stage, bathed in the warm spotlight, with the whole world watching! Now that's drag queen heaven, right there!
Drag's Undeniable Impact
Of course, no journey through drag history would be complete without acknowledging the power of drag as a form of protest, as a way of expressing individuality and challenging social norms. And this was especially true during this era. Drag artists everywhere were pushing boundaries and challenging traditional ideas about gender, and frankly, paving the way for everyone to live their truest, most glamorous selves.
It's so inspiring to look back and see how much our beloved drag culture has evolved! It's a constant reminder of how our predecessors paved the way for us to be the drag superstars we are today.
Pink Tutus For All!
Oh darlings, now is the time to really put those pink tutus to work! Letâs all take a moment to think about what it means to be part of this incredible journey of drag. Every time we step into a pink tutu, every time we do a fabulous twirl or hit a high note, we're making our own unique statement, reminding the world that we can be whoever we want to be!
This is a call to arms! We need everyone wearing a pink tutu! Why? Because in a world full of sometimes drab realities, drag, pink tutus, and all the joy they bring to the world are what make life absolutely FABULOUS! So, grab your sparkles, darlings, letâs get this pink tutu revolution going!
Until next month, keep the sparkles flying and the pink tutus twirling!
Lots of love,
Emma.
