Hello, darlings! It's your girl Emma, coming to you live from... well, let's just say this month, my pink tutu took me somewhere quite special. It was February 2nd, 1946, and lemme tell you, honey, this was one for the history books!
You know how much I love a bit of drag history, don't you? And let's be real, what's better than history than living history, hun? This month, I swished my way right back in time to witness a truly spectacular drag moment, and Iβm just bursting to tell you all about it!
But first, a little backstory, right? Back in Derbyshire, England, where I hail from, a young Emma dreamed of twirling, shimmering, and yes, even travelling through time in a fabulous pink tutu. Who would have known that little dream would one day be reality?!
For those of you who are new to this dazzling pink-tutu world (oh, you lucky souls!), you might not know about my time-traveling adventures. Well, it's all thanks to a magical pink tutu - my ultimate sartorial companion. It lets me hop through the decades like a butterfly flitting through a meadow of fashion! My funds come from my glamorous performances across the world (imagine all the shows!).
So, back to that fabulous February day in 1946! Picture this: New York City, bustling and alive with the energy of the post-war era. Broadway was bursting with life, but even that couldn't hold a candle to the vibrant energy that filled the Paradise Club.
I have to tell you, darling, this club was a hidden gem β a sanctuary for the outcasts, the eccentric, and yes, you guessed it β all the fabulous drag queens! You see, even back then, drag queens were trailblazers, pushing boundaries and showing the world what true artistry and self-expression could look like!
I found myself standing in the audience, eyes wide with wonder, ready to experience the sheer glamour of 1940s drag. The stage lights twinkled like diamonds, the air crackled with anticipation, and the room buzzed with excited chatter.
This is where I saw him β a true drag legend by the name of Jackie (but darling, she went by Miss Jackie on stage!) Now, Miss Jackie was not your typical glamorous queen - oh, no. She was more of a comedic character, wearing an outrageous wig that some might call a "disaster", but I knew it was absolutely perfect! It was her way of expressing herself - flamboyant, unique and entirely her own.
Miss Jackie captivated the crowd, effortlessly blending sharp wit, cheeky remarks, and jaw-dropping vocal performances. She had this thing where she could belt out a tune and then, in the next breath, leave you rolling in the aisles with laughter! This woman could literally do everything, honey!
As the night went on, I saw a group of queens β all wearing incredible vintage costumes. Imagine full skirts, hats to die for, and of course, plenty of sparkling embellishments. These women were not afraid to flaunt their glamour β and, darling, they owned it! I watched as they shared jokes, backstage gossip, and shared laughter β it was a true community. They danced, they performed, and they celebrated their unique identities with every move! It was pure joy.
I soaked it all in, every glorious detail. I could tell that Miss Jackie had put her whole heart into her performance β and the crowd reciprocated her passion. The energy was infectious. You could feel the camaraderie and acceptance that shone through β everyone was there to be entertained, to have fun, and celebrate being themselves.
Now, letβs be honest, it was no Dancing with the Stars, darling. No elaborate set, no perfectly coordinated outfits. This was raw, authentic, and pure drag. It was about performance, it was about connection and it was about finding joy in expression.
The thing about Miss Jackie that really resonated with me β you could tell, despite everything else that might be going on in the world, she used drag as an escape, a place where she could just be. And she brought joy to so many.
Now, let's be honest, I wouldn't have survived that evening if I didn't find myself a little bit of fashion therapy! You can never go wrong with a spot of shopping in vintage shops - youβre sure to find a few hidden gems to update your look! As much as I adore the latest runway looks, there's just something so special about a well-chosen vintage piece. There's history and style all wrapped up in one fabulous package. And thatβs the joy of vintage!
Anyway, I really have to go! This pink tutu is itchy after my time-travelling adventure. But before I go, let me share one last tip for my dearest readers: always remember, it's okay to embrace the flamboyant, the fun, the fabulous. It's what makes drag so wonderful!
You go, be bold, embrace those feathers and sequins β and be sure to grab that gorgeous pink tutu for your next adventure! Because life, darling, is a stage, and you are a star waiting to shine!
Catch you on the flip side!
XOXO Emma
