Hello darlings! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, back with another installment of my Time Travelling Adventures. As you all know, my life is pretty much a constant whirl of glitter, feathers and the most fabulous pink tutus you ever did see! And that, my dears, brings us to my latest journey…
November 11th, 1946, just over seven decades ago. Fancy a trip back to the roaring 40s? Grab your feather boas, darling, because this month we're diving headfirst into a world of post-war glamour!
Imagine it! War-torn Europe is finally catching its breath, and the whole world is celebrating a newfound sense of optimism. And what better way to celebrate than with a good ol' fashioned Drag show, am I right?
A little bit of History
Remember how I mentioned that my time travel is powered by the energy of the stage? Well, imagine my delight when I discovered that on November 11th, 1946, a whole swathe of fabulous drag queens were gracing the stage at The Club 18 in Los Angeles, the epicentre of American glamour! Talk about a dream come true! Now, darling, The Club 18 wasn’t just any club - it was a legendary spot frequented by Hollywood stars, and considered a beacon of entertainment and tolerance. The stage was overflowing with vibrant personalities, ready to whisk the audience away to a world of laughter, joy and sparkling sequins. Can you even imagine? A true glimpse into a glamorous world that thrived even under the shadow of war. I couldn’t resist donning my best pink tutu - I mean, what’s a time travel escapade without a sprinkle of pink?!
Fashioning a Dream
Speaking of pink, did you know that 1946 saw the re-emergence of the New Look, a stylish, feminine revolution in the world of fashion? With a distinct focus on soft curves, fitted bodices, and long flowing skirts, this era was all about expressing grace and elegance. I'm not sure about you dearies, but for me, this sounds like the perfect base for a stunning pink tutu look. It's just screams "elegant extravagance" in a way that is sure to make heads turn.
Think about it, darlings - this elegant style combined with a statement-making tutu. That’s how you create an iconic silhouette that not only celebrates the return to normalcy but also embraces a little bit of fabulous fantasy! You can take it all the way with dramatic hair and a smidgen of glitter on the cheekbones and eyes. Just a smidge - you want that timeless beauty with a hint of playfulness. And when you get home from that fabulous drag night out? Just slip into your finest silk robe, put on your favourite vinyl (I'm all about the big band jazz, darling!) and revel in the sheer opulence of it all.
Let’s Take a look at what's on
There are so many things that I just HAD to share with you. Just to start us off… I'm talking Peggy Lee sashaying through the airwaves with her sassy, captivating vocals! Can you even imagine that sultry voice singing about love, heartache and hope in the air? Peggy Lee’s a total icon and I admire how she used her platform to express herself and showcase her powerful, and powerful talent!
Remember, this time is just starting to see the rise of television. Imagine! Television - bringing a whole world of entertainment right into your living room. I hear they’ve already launched some variety shows, full of glamorous singing and dancing and... I can already envision drag queens gracing the screen!
And if we are talking glamour and style, my love, we can't forget about the fashion shows. Paris was buzzing with fabulous gowns and silhouettes as the world began to rediscover itself through the power of couture. They were pushing the boundaries, darling, and that excitement, that thirst for a beautiful new beginning is something I truly feel the need to express. We have so many things to celebrate and be grateful for – from fashion and music to art and storytelling! And what better way to celebrate life’s sweet and wild journey than with a shimmering pink tutu ?
Life lessons in Pink
Every single month when I time travel, I learn something about myself and about life.
And you know what, dears? It's about that inner spark. No matter how dark things get or how much adversity life throws our way, that light inside each of us should shine through. So let that pink tutu be your reminder to celebrate, to express yourself, and to shine your own light, wherever you are!
Let me know in the comments below: what’s your favorite time period in history? Are you planning your next Pink Tutu ensemble?
Until next time darlings,
Love, Emma xoxo
