Hello, darling divas and drag dearies! It's Emma here, your glamorous, time-travelling, tutu-adoring guide to the world of drag! Welcome back to Pink-tutu.com, where we celebrate the glorious history of our dazzling art form, one pink-sequined feather boa at a time!
Now, hold onto your feather boas, my darlings, because this month, our magical, time-travelling pink tutu has whisked me back to the fabulous year 1947! A year of post-war rebuilding, fabulous fashion and, you guessed it, fabulous drag!
Picture this, if you will: a swirling kaleidoscope of pastel hues, the glamour of Hollywood just starting to trickle into our everyday lives, and the burgeoning energy of a world just starting to rediscover itself. This is the world of 5th May, 1947! And, darling, itâs the perfect time to pull out your sparkly tulle, grab your vintage makeup brushes, and slip into your fabulous feather boa.
Whatâs Happening on the Drag Scene? As you know, dear readers, the world of drag doesnât just happen in swanky bars and glamorous theaters. It exists on every corner, seeping into every aspect of society, making the world a little bit brighter, a little bit bolder, and a whole lot more fun!
In 1947, we can find traces of this dazzling energy everywhere:
- Paris: At the Palais de la Musique, a transvestite cabaret show, known as "Le Grand Bal des Follies," is enthralling audiences. Picture feather boas, sequins galore, and extravagant makeup! This is where drag truly shines â pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and, most importantly, having a roaring good time.
- New York City: The Copacabana â that legendary nightspot on the famous Broadway strip â is hosting the captivating and incredibly talented âGloria De Haven." Gloria is known for her comedic timing, sharp wit, and those fabulous costumes that bring the house down! Sheâs a shining example of the impact drag had on cabaret and performance during this era.
- London: Over in jolly old England, the world is buzzing about *the opening of the world famous âThe Windmill Theatre!â *This glamorous London cabaret has embraced a bold âtoplessâ aesthetic. The beautiful dancers (yes, weâre talking drag here!) are making a statement about female sexuality and defying societal expectations. Weâre talking fabulous choreography, eye-catching costumes and a healthy dose of defiance against the âacceptedâ norm!
- Las Vegas: While the Vegas Strip we know and love wasnât yet the glamorous spectacle we see today, it was starting to blossom! âThe El Rancho Vegasâ hosted the daring** comedienne Judy Garland, who is, in fact, âa Drag Icon" in her own right! Garland had a history of adopting masculine style attire. There was nothing more fun in this period of change than defying norms and expectations.
- Around the Globe: Across the world, from Sydney to Buenos Aires, there were talented and inspiring individuals pushing the boundaries of performance and gender expression. Many of their contributions went un-documented, which makes the exploration of their legacies even more fascinating!
It wouldnât be a true Emma Pink Tutu post without some fabulous shopping recommendations for all you dazzling divas! Oh, darling, just think â this is 1947. Weâre in a time when vintage clothing is, quite literally, just âvintage.â
The must-have accessories of 1947 are:
- Feather boas in bright colours â and the bolder, the better!
- Glamorous jewelry: Oversized earrings, sparkling necklaces, anything that catches the eye and makes a statement!
- High-heeled shoes with chunky platforms. You canât go wrong with these in 1947 â just donât trip!
- Stunning hats: think wide-brimmed fedoras or elegant cloches!
- An abundance of rhinestones and sequins. Embrace the glamour and make it rain, darlings!
While 1947 is still in the âpost-war recovery era," it was also an incredibly dynamic time. Society was undergoing rapid transformation: social attitudes were shifting, fashion trends were evolving, and the very way people understood themselves was changing. This is the era of âThe New Look,â and drag artists were right at the forefront, showcasing this change.
As always, darlings, I love this time! This was a world where drag flourished not as a spectacle, but as a powerful expression of personal identity, artistic talent, and a refusal to conform. This is the time we learn from to push our own limits.
