Hello my gorgeous darlings, it's your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveler Emma, bringing you the latest from the magical world of drag, fashion and history! This month, I've zipped myself back in time, right to May 5th, 1948, and let me tell you, this day was bursting with exciting things in the drag world, darling! But before we delve into that, let me tell you a little about my outfit.
It’s been quite the struggle picking a perfect tutu for this trip! You know how I am, obsessed with a bit of bling, but the shimmering sequins were deemed far too futuristic, so I’ve gone for a vintage floral print. Honestly, a floral design was all the rage in 1948 and it feels so classic. I've paired it with a bright pink silk camisole (did I tell you I found the most delightful haberdashery near the Royal Albert Hall last week?) and a matching feather boa. This vintage style will have me blending right in with the fabulous fashionistas of the day, even if I do have my secret stash of pink lipgloss and mascara tucked in my tutu pocket.
Speaking of style, oh my! I think I've found my true calling in this glorious past, my dears! Imagine: crinolines, full skirts, bouffant hairdos! I've had the time of my life dancing my heart out at a glamorous nightclub in New York. It was, as they say, the cat’s pajamas!
Speaking of the fabulous cities of the world, let's go back to May 5th, 1948:
London, the Hub of Chic:
If you were looking for a fab night out, you could have graced the stage of the Windmill Theatre. They’re still renowned for their variety shows featuring sensational female impersonators. Let me tell you, the dresses alone! Talk about exquisite! Some say this era gave birth to "drag" as we know it.
In 1948, the Windmill was at its peak of fame. We’re talking a daily schedule packed with talent, music and performances to knock your socks off. You can imagine my glee, popping in to enjoy a performance or two! They are renowned for their humour and outrageous routines - definitely the stuff legends are made of. I saw an especially daring routine featuring a drag act known only as 'Bubbles'. She was the quintessential bombshell, with her dazzling sequined gown and fabulous comedic timing. Bubbles, if you’re reading this, well done, dear!
Of course, I couldn’t possibly visit London without a shopping spree. I’ve gone crazy with some gorgeous vintage fabrics – we’re talking velvet and lace, my loves! They'll definitely inspire a few outfits for the upcoming London Fashion Week event. Just wait and see my fabulous creations!
Across the Pond in the States:
This year has seen the beginning of the legendary “Jewel Box Revue”, a stunning all-drag troupe right in the heart of Harlem! These performers, all fabulous women in drag, really put on a show, showcasing dance routines and costumes that would put any modern-day Broadway spectacle to shame. Oh, and they’re quite renowned for their sassy comedy too. You can just imagine the audience roar! I simply adore seeing talent and ingenuity flourish, and I hear they're about to release a sensational new set! Can you imagine the excitement? I can already smell the popcorn!
And Then There Was Paris:
Even Paris is hopping with the thrill of drag shows. I simply adored the legendary ‘Le Chat Noir.’ This artistic and vibrant club became synonymous with creativity and ooh-la-la! There’s no wonder they draw crowds from all over. Imagine! We’re talking bohemian-chic vibes, cabaret performances and stunning drag artists. And let's not forget the Moulin Rouge! Imagine my joy! It was full of stunning ladies and gentlemen in their finery. I saw one performer who was absolutely mesmerizing. She wore the most extravagant gown – a swirl of silks and feathers, darling. A complete vision in pink. It was like stepping out of a beautiful dream!
Sharing the History, Sharing the Glamour:
It's simply enchanting to watch how the history of drag unfolded in these glorious years. We owe these pioneers so much! Their fearlessness, creativity, and humor helped shape the drag scene of today and we can see these very clear influences still in our performances. Everytime I step on a stage, I honour these pioneers! It's in their footsteps we're walking! And let’s be honest, their flamboyant outfits were quite the inspiration! And even though their time might have been one where society viewed these performances with suspicion or even ridicule, they kept dancing, they kept entertaining and most importantly they kept being themselves! Oh honey, they certainly slayed it! That’s true artistry, that’s dedication!
This time trip has simply confirmed one thing - our passion for drag, for glamour and for making people smile, runs deep in the heart of all those who came before us. It's like a magic spell. Just a dash of glitter, a sprinkle of imagination and suddenly... poof... you’re on stage! And honey, everyone’s got it in them. I promise!
Well darlings, I’m signing off for now, but I’ve got a busy week ahead: first, a private performance for some fashionable friends, then I have to get ready for the upcoming “Pink Tutu Fashions of the Month” event! I’m going to unveil a few new looks inspired by my little trip back in time – don’t worry, plenty of pink, and perhaps a touch of vintage magic!
In the meantime, make sure you’re following @Pink_Tutu on Insta! I'm always uploading pictures of my fab adventures and dazzling outfits! Until next month my loves!
Love,
Emma
