#DragQueenHistory: 1st January 1950! 💖✨🩰

Hello darlings! It's your girl, Emma, back again with another fabulous entry in my #DragQueenHistory series! This month, my magical pink tutu has whisked me back to 1st January 1950 - a date chock full of glamorous possibilities, darlings! 💅

It's #Post361 for me here on www.pink-tutu.com, so strap on your diamante tiaras and prepare for a wild ride! You know the drill: a bit of history, a lot of glitz, and a sprinkle of pink tutu magic!

This month, the air is thick with excitement as we kick off the New Year - a fresh slate, a chance for fabulous new beginnings, and a glorious opportunity to explore the captivating world of drag in its purest, most enchanting form! 💖

Where in the World Is Emma?

Imagine, if you will, a bustling city pulsating with the rhythm of a thousand different lives... We're in New York City! The energy here is infectious, like a high-kick on stage - I'm positively buzzing! ✨

This city is famous for its towering skyscrapers and its pulsating night life. In the 50s, drag was mostly underground - hidden away in back rooms and tucked away in smoky bars. I'm talking about drag balls and secret performances, a world of secrecy and a thirst for expression. 💋

New York, for me, is like a giant catwalk. The street is my runway! And guess what? My magical pink tutu makes everyone want to be a ballerina, or at least borrow my style!

The Underground World of Drag Balls

The heart of the underground drag scene was undoubtedly the drag ball. Imagine: glitzy costumes, elaborate makeup, and a thrilling display of creative self-expression, all taking place in these hidden dens of glamour! 🎉

Now, let's imagine ourselves in the middle of a drag ball! Think roaring twenties glamour, a sprinkle of Parisian chic, and a touch of wild, uninhibited freedom! We’re talking floor-length feathers, dramatic make-up and sequins as far as the eye can see! 💖

These balls were more than just performances - they were about forging connections and building a community. It was here, hidden away in secret locations, that drag queens and kings found solace, strength and, most importantly, each other! 🥰

The music at these balls would have been a delightful mixture of swinging jazz, smoky blues and soulful ballads, a soundtrack to an unforgettable night. 🎺

What About the Fashion, Hun?

Let's talk fashion, darlings! Fashion, and let me emphasize the ‘fashion,’ is everything! The 50s were all about structure, curves, and glamorous details. Think fitted waistcoats, nipped in waists, and skirts that swirl and shimmy as you walk!
👗
A perfect touch for a 1950s look, a bold touch of pink on a delicate tulle, you’ll find a statement, statement, statement - the pink tutu, obviously. You can thank me later, because I'll be bringing that statement look back from the 50s into our world! 👑

A Peek Behind The Curtain

It wouldn't be a trip into the past without learning something, darlies! While I was in the Big Apple, I came across an archive filled with photos, sketches, and even handwritten letters. I was captivated by the story of a drag queen called “Lily”. Lily wasn’t just any drag queen, she was the reigning queen of the underground ballroom scene. She was known for her flawless, dramatic performances and her showstopping wardrobe! ✨

Lily's story serves as a poignant reminder of the fight that our drag queens had to endure to create a space for themselves. It was a constant fight for acceptance, a fight for visibility. They did so with glamour and with grace! I mean, wouldn’t you wear an amazing pink tutu if you had to? I certainly would!

I couldn’t help but be inspired by Lily's grit and determination. The more I read about the struggles they endured, the more I wanted to share their stories. Every queen in their way has paved the way for all of us! 🙌

Emma’s Drag Agenda: Spreading the Pink Tutu Gospel!

Now, we've all heard it before – the saying, "every generation forgets." That’s why we need to be like a drag queen in our time machine: remember the past, embrace the future! The pink tutu can bring everyone together - you see the way my magical pink tutu transcends the boundaries of time? Let's be a generation that remembers. Let's be a generation that keeps the spark of drag alive! 🤩

One of my most favourite things about time travelling is spreading the pink tutu love! Let’s get everyone wearing a pink tutu, I mean why not?

Here’s the challenge, darling, let’s start a fashion trend right here right now, and take the pink tutu world wide! * Let's share stories, let's tell our history - both on and off the stage! * Let’s showcase those hidden diamonds and spotlight all of those queens in our history. Let's put those stories out there - the world needs to hear about the women (and men) who had to fight for every step!

If I could show one thing from the 1950s world, it's that a fabulous drag look knows no boundaries! Whether it's a hidden speakeasy or a glittering catwalk, it's a universal truth that shines brighter than a sequin in the dark.

This is a message from Emma and from Lily and from everyone who's fought for a spot on the stage! Be yourself. Embrace the glitter. And of course, let's bring the pink tutu out of the closet and into the light!!

I hope you’re all feeling extra glamorous! And let me know - when did you wear a pink tutu, and what does the color pink mean to you?! ✨ I'm off on a glamorous spree, darlings! Until next time, stay fabulous, stay sassy and, of course, stay pink! 💖

Yours in tutus,

Emma 🩰
