Hiya darlings! Emma here, your resident time-traveling tutu queen, and it's time for another jaunt through history, baby! Get those teacups ready because this month we're stepping back to a fabulous day, 9th September, 1950, where the world was just begging for a sprinkle of pink tulle and a dash of drag!
This is Post Number 369, you know! That's like, practically a whole century of tutu travels right there! It takes a lot of hard work and glamorous performances to fund this sort of thing, darlings. You wouldn't believe the outfits I wear at the clubs these days. It's all for the history books, the internet, and my obsession with tutus, darling! Don't even get me started on my current collection! Oh, my pink tulle!
And speaking of tutu obsessions, you know that we've got to get this pink tutu movement happening, darling! It's a movement, you hear? Just imagine, a world filled with the glorious pink tulle swirling and dancing in the wind, and not just at a drag show!
Okay, I know, I know. You're thinking, "But darling, isn't the world obsessed enough with pink?" Well, yes, dear, yes it is, BUT are they obsessed with pink tutus? That's what I'm talking about! So let's set our pink tutus and time machines to September 9th, 1950! Ready? Off we go!
Boop! There we go! Suddenly I'm on a busy street corner in a fabulous little town! People are hurrying by, everyone's got that sort of classic 50's vibe, so I'm wearing my 50's-inspired pink tutu with all the frills. Imagine the most exquisite cupcake but in a tutu, and that's pretty much my ensemble! It's certainly a conversation starter in the year 1950!
This whole history thing can be pretty disorienting, darling. It's quite a bit quieter than the London club scene that I usually navigate. I guess that's the difference between being in history and just reading about it. It's living, it's a whole vibe!
Okay, but where are all the fabulous shows? This whole thing isn't just about pink, honey, this is a drag-focused exploration! What kind of Drag Queen am I if I don't have a juicy show to go to? So, naturally, I’m off to a local newspaper, because the newspapers are a true treasure trove of drag history.
You see, before Google was invented, we had printed resources. Those little yellowed papers with black ink can tell a lot of secrets about the underground drag scene of the 50s!
After lots of poring over paper, a whole world of Drag opened up. Imagine that: Drag has always been around, darling, we are as ancient as the pyramids. This was the year of the Paris Follies Bergère and all the glorious, sassy, flamboyant women of this incredible Parisian dance hall, and they've been performing there since the 1890s! A real jewel for our history books, if I do say so myself.
While you were all enjoying your glamorous ballet-themed ballgowns back in the 50s, there were plenty of talented dancers in drag performing these shows and more, and they deserve to be in the history books as much as their glamorous colleagues. Don't tell me you didn't see the incredible performances and know there was magic in the air, I know those stories of drag back then have been passed on, in whispers! Let me tell you, those Follies are fabulously exciting and fabulously full of stories waiting to be heard!
In all of these vintage-style locations, you know my trusty, sparkly pink tutu never leaves my side! It's amazing how my time-traveling pink tutu keeps things feeling fresh, bright, and full of excitement - all with a sprinkle of glamour, and let’s be honest, the odd glitter mishap here and there! I'm definitely a girly girl who gets down with pink, sequins, and good times, darling, and it never hurts to bring some sass and sparkle to every time period I enter!
My adventures with a magical pink tutu keep the time-travel going, the pink tutu, that's my ticket to a life in all eras of drag. If the history books don't have me in them, that’s just because they haven’t had me yet. I'm always searching for those beautiful lost stories and the glorious lives that make our vibrant history. Don’t forget, you can find these posts on the www.pink-tutu.com blog, where I update my blog post every month!
Now, where's that little teacup and all the best stories I can tell you, from Paris Follies Bergère itself!
See you soon, and keep the tulle pink!
P.S Remember those beautiful Parisian venues? Oh darlings! They deserve a whole blog post! I mean, how divine would a pink tutu drag show look there? Imagine it! Just a bunch of us wearing tutus with more pink, and with sparkles oh my darling!, performing with the Parisian grace and elegance. Just imagining it makes me feel giddy with excitement! *Maybe I'll have a show to help with those funding woes! * Maybe just maybe! Stay tuned for updates, because my fabulous friends, this blog's got you covered.
