Hello, darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, and I'm so excited to whisk you all off to a vintage adventure, right back to November 11th, 1952! I know, I know, it's the stuff of dreams, isn't it?
Just picture this: a Derbyshire lass, all dolled up in her sparkly pink tutu, magically transported through time, right to the heart of the 1950s. It’s almost enough to make you swoon, lovelies!
As always, my trusty pink tutu and I have a packed schedule, starting with…well, a little bit of retail therapy of course!
Vintage Vogue - The Shopping Spree!I landed, right in the middle of the famous Macy’s department store in New York, where the holiday displays were all decked out in their full Christmas glory! And I just had to indulge in some serious vintage shopping. Picture it: petticoats galore, stylish frocks, the most delightful sequined bags – it was a dream come true!
Remember darlings, the 1950s was an era all about that vintage elegance. Full skirts, cinched waists, the ultimate in femininity, it was just made for a pink tutu-wearing drag queen like myself, and I couldn’t resist scooping up a whole box full of these glorious fashion finds. You'll just have to wait and see how I'm gonna incorporate them into my next drag show back in the 21st century!
Drag Queens: Behind the Velvet RopeBut, darlings, I wouldn't be a true drag queen if I didn't dedicate some of my time travelling to the glorious world of Drag! So, armed with a map and my vintage New York fashion finds, I took a little trolley ride to the heart of Greenwich Village, where the very first drag balls were starting to pop up.
Unfortunately, no official record of the night’s event exists (the irony!). But darling, we just HAD to have some fun, didn't we?
I shimmied my way into a little smoky jazz bar with my glittery pink tutu flowing behind me and wow! It was a real scene, my dears! You can’t get more authentic than a jazz bar in the 1950s, tucked away on a little backstreet with the faint smell of smoky cigarettes hanging in the air. I sat down and enjoyed some classic tunes and felt like I'd been thrown right into a 1950s movie.
As for the queens? They were captivating! It was all about classic, elegant glamour, darling, with dramatic makeup, voluminous hairdos, and dresses with serious wow-factor. Just imagining those gowns - they must have been real works of art, crafted by hand with exquisite attention to detail.
There was definitely a sense of liberation, a celebration of individuality, and a touch of daring rebellion amongst these women – an early expression of the drag movement that still makes my heart soar!
I found a local "Drag" club tucked away behind a smoky restaurant and took a peep into the show – and honestly darling, the energy was just electric!
The Power of PinkIt wasn’t just the beautiful clothes and dazzling makeup, either. There was a spirit in the room, a sense of community, a camaraderie amongst these drag queens that was utterly inspiring. I found myself mesmerised, mesmerized, dazzled, charmed by it all!
Seeing these pioneers of drag, these trailblazers paving the way for queens of today, it was such an honour, my darlings! The power they commanded, the freedom they embodied in their drag expressions...It made me reflect on how far the art of drag has come since these early days!
So, how do we celebrate our heritage as drag queens, darlings? I know - by dressing in the most gorgeous pink tutus, naturally!
Think of it: A tutu isn't just a piece of clothing, it's a symbol, darling. It's a symbol of confidence, of courage, of being unafraid to express yourself freely, regardless of what society expects of you. Just like those queens in the smoky bars of the 1950s, just like our own glorious drag history!
And my pink tutu? It reminds me of the vibrant spirit of those trailblazers, and reminds me of all the beauty, creativity and passion we’ve embraced and built upon as a community! So next time you're feeling confident, fabulous, and ready to rock that stage, remember the power of a pink tutu and unleash your inner star!
That’s it from me for now darlings, until next month! But, remember my dear, the world is your oyster and there’s a little bit of magic waiting for you just around the corner - just like the magic of my sparkly pink tutu. Go forth and be FABULOUS!
