Hello my gorgeous glitterati! It's Emma here, your time-traveling, tutu-obsessed drag historian extraordinaire, ready to whisk you away to the glorious and fabulous past! March 1953 was certainly a hotbed of history, darling, and even hotter with some drag deliciousness on the side. Let's dive in and see what all the fuss is about!
I’m popping my vintage time-traveling tutu, fresh from a trip to the dry cleaners - it’s always best to keep my pink feathers immaculate! You know me, it's all about making a statement with the right shade of pink! Oh, and a fab feather boa goes a long way. But where will my time travel adventures take us this month?
As usual, it’s all about that iconic colour pink and the perfect outfit to go with it, right? Now let's step into the pink shoes of our fabulous selves and set sail into a month of 1953 in a world bursting with glamorous delights.
It's 1953 - what’s it like, darlings? Think full-skirted gowns and an absolute explosion of vibrant colours. Now let me tell you about one truly fabulous place I recently discovered, New York City, darling! Just imagine, this is where the hottest fashion and even hotter performances happen! They're the center of it all and they are just absolutely sizzling with some seriously sassy shows! It's the perfect spot to grab your tickets, and let’s not forget those dazzling drag queens who sashay their way across the stage, just ready to leave their mark on history!
Speaking of sassy, can we please talk about these fabulous entertainers I met? They were rocking out on a show in NYC – an absolute treat for the senses! Imagine, this was just before drag truly got its recognition and it was all about that secret world where they would perform just behind closed doors – these are my kinds of places! Can’t you just picture it, a glittery little club just pulsating with excitement and all that sassy energy? That's just the sort of environment I can get into!
Now, let's turn the page in the story book, and just have a wee gander into what the fabulous people in London are doing – it was all about The Palladium theatre then, you see. If you wanted to see some show-stopping performances, the Palladium was the place to be, and boy was it spectacular! We’re talking some seriously fierce costumes, incredible singers, and even the legendary Charlie Chaplin popping in for a quick look - he was a darling, wasn’t he? What an absolute treat to watch them just radiate their magic. Now, picture it: all those colourful lights shimmering over the stage as these incredibly talented entertainers danced and twirled and, just wowed us with every note!
But hold onto your tiaras, my dears! If we're looking for a bit of glitz, some sparkle, and of course, those gorgeous, outrageous gowns – oh honey! The Coronation of the fabulous Queen Elizabeth! – it was a huge deal! Let’s just say they were out in their finest, ready to pay homage to a dazzling monarch. Honestly, it was just a huge party – that’s just what we like, right? – imagine this absolutely stunning spectacle of everyone in their most fantastic outfits - so much elegance and class! It was just pure fabulousness!
It was all about keeping those pink and pink-hued fabrics sparkling!
But wait! Who are we forgetting?! It wouldn't be a proper trip through time if we didn't check in on Paris – the fabulous fashion capital of the world! What are they up to, darlings? In a word? They are keeping it classy, darlings, with fashion that truly epitomizes elegance and grace! They’re just absolutely killing it when it comes to their sartorial splendor – the dresses and hats they are making - I mean oh my goodness, they are beyond spectacular! Let’s talk about fabric and color combinations - this is what fashion is all about! And those fabulous designers? They're creating gowns for the ages, making those Parisian streets just burst with sophistication!
Now here's a bit of an insight into what this gorgeous month held:
Here’s what’s happening in drag land for this particular month:
- The Drag Ball of the Century: I wouldn't dare call it anything else because for those who could, it was just an absolute delight to see! We are talking New York City’s legendary Stork Club - it was an underground delight that was home to some of the biggest Drag queens and cabaret stars - I mean, if you are thinking big drag, you just cannot get any better! It’s important to remember that Drag during this era had a more intimate side to it, and The Stork Club truly highlighted this aspect of the culture. A true hidden treasure, nestled in an almost private spot where this fabulousness happened every month, just bringing joy to those who loved it – truly something special!
Did I miss anything, dear dears?
- I think I have brought a little bit of history and fabulousness to your day, just as you enjoy a spot of afternoon tea, I can already imagine how the month is going to progress… maybe one of you is enjoying the best afternoon tea, or if you are going to the pub later on – don’t forget those pink shoes! - I mean, don’t you dare forget your fab shoes to show your support and help make that drag history, as much as you can, by showing those people around you how it is done!
You know me – I love getting those fabulous time travel tutus going - but this month’s special surprise?
- It’s time for a drag show at our annual Pink Tutu fundraiser - make sure you all put on your pink tutus! We'll be celebrating 1953 in a big way. Oh, we’ll be doing everything with pink this month, my darlings – think of all that fun we will have, I mean we're talking big pink fun for everyone, and everyone in those glorious tutus is guaranteed to enjoy the day.
So join me at my next post. I have more pink tulle to spread and some of the fabulousest historical moments that are bound to get you shaking your tail feathers - it’s gonna be divine. Stay pink my darling, and until we meet again…
