Hello my darlings! Emma here, back from another fabulously fun trip in my trusty time-travelling pink tutu. This month I'm twirling my way back to July 7th, 1954, for a truly spectacular time capsule adventure. It's like a time machine filled with glittery glamour, sparkling sequins and oh-so-fabulous feathers. Now, grab your favourite shade of pink lipstick, darling, and let me take you on a journey back in time!
I landed right in the heart of London, smack dab in the middle of the West End theatre district. You know how much I love the West End, it's just dripping with theatre history and of course, fabulous drag. Oh, the shows, the music, the stories… It's all just simply exquisite! And let me tell you, the 1950s West End was no different.
Imagine my delight when I strolled past the London Coliseum, the largest theatre in the country, to find they were showcasing a revival of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance". I'm talking beautiful costumes, brilliant music, and a healthy dose of gender-bending fun! The very essence of fabulous! You wouldn't believe the costumes they were wearing! My dear, feathers, sparkles, the whole shebang! And let me tell you, they wore it with a certain 'je ne sais quoi', a playful wink to the audience that made everyone chuckle with delight. It felt very... Drag! I bet it was packed with folks from the drag community enjoying a great show! Oh, I bet there were more than a few tutus on display, you bet!
However, the fun didn't stop there. The Palladium, another iconic London theatre, was host to "A Night Out with Jack Hylton", a variety show brimming with vaudeville, cabaret, and more. Imagine: music, laughter, a smorgasbord of theatrical delights – and dare I say… Drag?! It was like the perfect combination of musical performance and a dazzling spectacle. Can't you just picture the dazzling costumes and playful stage personalities?!
Meanwhile, a few miles away at the BBC Television Theatre, an utterly captivating performance by none other than "The Crazy Gang" was taking centre stage. I swear, these lads were the pioneers of drag - comedy at its finest, but with a splash of gender-bending magic.
Remember, these were the days of theatre, radio, and cinema – the dawn of entertainment as we know it! And you know me, darling! I love nothing more than to dive into those iconic, early performances to understand how they laid the foundations for today’s drag world. I can't wait for our next trip!
Of course, a trip back in time wouldn't be complete without a bit of shopping. Let me tell you, London was awash with the hottest fashion trends. Think pencil skirts, nipped-in waists, and gorgeous shades of pink, baby! I spotted some seriously inspiring dresses, perfectly suited to a drag queen’s wardrobe! (Maybe they were even inspiring my own Pink Tutu collection). Oh, and don’t even get me started on the accessories! It was truly a dream come true for any fashionable girl, especially one with a passion for pink!
As I stood admiring a window display at Harrods, a dazzling vintage store just for queens opened up and... It was pure magic, dear! This little haven of 1950s glam had sequins, feathers, everything my drag-loving heart desired! I must have stayed for hours browsing and reminiscing about those good old days! Of course, I couldn’t leave without some fabulous buys! Now I can bring those fabulous fashion finds back to the modern day with me, creating unique pieces inspired by those vintage delights! I swear, darling, these treasures would even make a queen from the modern era swoon!
Now, it's time for me to put away my magical pink tutu. This trip back to 1954 has truly given me inspiration for future blog posts, performances, and even a few ideas for the next Pink Tutu Collection! You know how much I love to weave together fashion, history, and that fabulous sense of performance. And maybe, just maybe, I can get more and more people to wear a Pink Tutu, darling! You never know, just imagine it, a world full of tutus... It would truly be a masterpiece of fashion and pure joy!
