Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! It's a new year, which means a brand new adventure, and this month we're waltzing back to the 1st of January, 1956. As ever, my trusty pink tutu has been working its magic and I'm feeling all the glitter and glamour of the mid-20th century. Oh, the fabulousness!
I must say, 1956 was quite the year. The first transistor radio made its debut, the Queen of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, was crowned King of the Hill with his first chart-topping album, and, most importantly for us, the world of drag was getting absolutely bonkers.
My darling, this date in history, a new year’s day, saw a fantastic opening night at a club in Greenwich Village called the ‘Blue Angel’. Imagine, the air alive with excitement, a room buzzing with anticipation…and this time, the magic wasn't only in the pink tutu on my fabulous self, but the talent on stage! This night featured a cabaret extraordinaire with a whole slew of iconic drag performers: the sassy, seductive and simply sensational, BeBe Barron, and the fabulous, flamboyant, The Baroness. It must have been the most incredible spectacle, full of sassy songs and dazzling dance routines. Talk about a fabulous way to start the year!
Speaking of spectacles, can we discuss how absolutely iconic the drag fashion in 1956 was? Think glamorous, sharp-shouldered jackets, feather boas, sequined dresses, and towering hats. Oh darling, those outfits could cut through any party with their fabulousness. Imagine walking into the club that night, a whirlwind of glitter and sequins, the air electric with the anticipation of the show. The glamour was, well, a real thing.
As always, a trip through the history of drag always leaves me feeling full of inspiration. From those early queens to the absolute drag icons of today, it’s a journey filled with glamour, creativity, and a touch of mischief. But most of all, it reminds me that we have a rich heritage of expressing ourselves with daring and fabulousness, a legacy we should cherish.
To celebrate, let's have a little "Pink Tutu Travels" quiz, darling:
