Pink Tutu Time Travels: March 3rd, 1956 - The Year of the Tutu! 🩰💖

Hello my darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu wearing, time traveling drag queen. Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your monthly dose of drag history! This is blog post number 435, and today we’re taking a little trip back to 1956 - the year the tutu truly shone!

You know me, darlings, I’m always living for the twirl, and 1956 was a real treat for a pink tutu-loving queen like me. Let’s get on with it, shall we?

Whipping Up a Whirlwind in 1956:

March 3rd, 1956… Where did my pink tutu and I land this time, you ask? Why, in none other than fabulous New York City, of course! Now, 1956 wasn’t just about rock and roll and poodle skirts (though, honestly, I wouldn’t mind taking a dip in the past to get my hands on a vintage poodle skirt… maybe I should plan another time trip…)

1956 was a glorious time for drag, especially in the US, my lovelies! The "Drag Ball" scene was booming in places like New York and Chicago, attracting huge crowds with spectacular performances that were starting to get serious recognition and media attention. These events weren’t just your run-of-the-mill social gatherings; think drag balls in all their glamorous glory! And who needs a pink tutu when you've got a ballroom full of the most stunning drag queens, decked out in their finest? (Alright, maybe a pink tutu would make the whole thing even more fab!)

Think gowns shimmering under the disco lights, and lip sync battles hotter than a stage light… just picture it! Drag was slowly evolving into an even bigger thing, becoming a whole movement – a testament to the sheer creativity and artistry of drag queens all around the world, and definitely an important turning point in drag history!

Travelin’ in My Pink Tutu:

The other amazing thing about this time trip is that I’m really feeling the 1950s fashion vibes, darling! Oh, the gorgeous colours! The amazing styles! The silhouettes! That era was really the time for feminine curves, and honestly, there’s just nothing quite as beautiful as a 50s silhouette - think cinched waist and a wide flowing skirt – absolutely perfect for twirling. Of course, a bit of a modern twist never hurts, and let’s face it, there’s never a bad time for a touch of pink – you know what they say: Pink is never boring, darling! It just wouldn't be right for my Pink Tutu Time Travels to go to any era without my fabulous pink tutu. I am absolutely a drag queen of fashion and beauty, darling!

Speaking of beautiful, I just have to talk about ballet fashion – so glamorous and delicate. Just like the drag scene was blooming, ballet was making its own kind of revolution in the US back in 1956! The dancers were pushing boundaries and making ballet more accessible for audiences - a real sign of artistic freedom. Now, ballet might seem miles away from drag, but think about it - both art forms celebrate beauty, grace, and theatricality. They’re both about movement, storytelling and finding your own unique style. I wouldn’t be surprised to find my tutu at a ballet performance somewhere… that would be spectacular, don’t you think?

From Derbyshire to New York City:

Of course, I wasn't born in New York. My darling, I hail from the charming county of Derbyshire, a world away from the glamour of New York. You know I adore a bit of Britishness – a spot of tea, a cheeky chat, and of course, the delightful Derbyshire countryside. And yes, my dears, I do perform here - I wouldn’t dare skip out on my home base! We have a wonderful drag scene right here, filled with local talents and passionate queens – the drag community is truly global, and our shows in Derbyshire have been making a splash of their own! We've even been featuring some ballet inspired routines… I'm thinking of organizing a show inspired by the history of dance, don’t you think that would be a fabulous production, darling?

But I can’t resist travelling the world - my drag shows in different places all help me pay for those time travels - and the thrill of seeing those different places, seeing how drag flourishes everywhere is just the biggest reward.
