Hello my darlings! It’s Emma here, your fabulous, time-traveling, pink-tutu-clad queen! This month, we’re dipping our toes (and maybe a little bit of glitter) into the enchanting world of 10th October 1956. Now, picture this: I'm whisked back in time by my magical, shimmering, pink tutu, landing with a poof of tulle and a shower of sparkle in...New York City! Oh, darling, I must tell you, New York in the 50s had an undeniable glam, and let's face it, nothing says "glam" quite like a showstopping pink tutu!
But first, tea! I’m getting ahead of myself, aren’t I? As always, let’s kick off with my favourite: what’s happening in the fabulous world of drag for this particular date?
Well, lovelies, 1956 saw the rise of the legendary, Jackie Curtis! He was just a wee chap then, experimenting with makeup and finding his theatrical voice. It wouldn’t be until a little later he’d burst onto the scene as the sensational drag queen icon we all know and love. And, trust me, darling, the stage was already brewing with excitement!
A Little Taste of History:
It's crucial to remember, 1956 was a time when drag was, shall we say, “not quite mainstream.” But in those underground circles, darling, a world of pure camp magic was unfolding. Imagine, those daring souls, like Jackie Curtis, taking to the stage in bars and underground clubs. Oh, to have been there! The courage, the creativity, the pure brilliance, it makes my heart sing!
Now, as I sashay through the bustling streets of New York City, I am so impressed with the fashion. The ladies are wearing such darling, wide-skirted dresses with cinched waists - I’m simply in love! They really know how to turn a head. Just like us fabulous pink-tutu-wearing queens, don't you think?
Of course, darling, a true time traveler always seeks out the local gems. My Pink Tutu blog wouldn't be complete without a splash of the best vintage shopping. In the bustling markets of 1956, I snagged a pair of vintage pearl earrings that would put a dame to shame - perfect with a chic pink-tutu outfit! I can't wait to show you the full ensemble!
My Pink Tutu Diaries: Adventures in 1956!
But, of course, my lovelies, the highlight of this time travel trip was discovering the secret, underground drag show scene. Now, this was a sight to behold! The air buzzed with energy as queens in all sorts of glamour took the stage. The makeup, darling! Oh, the makeup! It was so daring and imaginative!
One particular show I found was a real spectacle, tucked away in a dimly lit back room of a little café. The queen who performed her cabaret number wearing a feathered, pink-and-purple showgirl costume absolutely captivated the audience. Just think, she probably even had some dazzling rhinestones! It was like a piece of theatre in that little, intimate setting.
Don’t Forget!
Remember, darlings, the magic of drag isn’t about simply dressing up - it’s about taking risks, pushing boundaries, and shining your authentic, fabulous self. As Jackie Curtis reminds us, and as our vintage fashion inspirations do as well, it's about using drag to say something meaningful, something fun, and something wildly fabulous.
The Tutu Movement!
Now, here’s what you can do! Next time you're getting ready for a night out, darling, consider taking inspiration from these bold trailblazers. Dust off that tutu from the back of your closet - or, you could always pick one up in your favorite colour at your local thrift shop. It's about making a statement, about having fun, about showing the world your inner glitter. After all, a pink tutu always makes a statement!
Stay fabulous my darlings! And never forget: “You do you, boo!”
