Darlings! It's your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, back with another blast from the past! February's just begun, but I'm already bursting with excitement, all thanks to my pink tutu! You know the drill, babes, each month, my magical tutu takes me somewhere amazing. This time? Paris, darling! It's a proper treat to be whisking you off to the City of Lights!
Now, February 2nd 1957 was no ordinary night in the French capital. No, it was a night of glittering spectacle! The Moulin Rouge was abuzz with glamour. The iconic cabaret, already steeped in history, was having its very own historical night – Le Début de Paris – celebrating its re-opening! Talk about glamorous beginnings! And it all kicked off with Joséphine Baker herself! Can you imagine, darling, a drag queen who was in the same room as Josephine? Swoon!
Just imagine the atmosphere – the energy, the laughter, the je ne sais quoi of the place! It must have been electric, a kaleidoscope of colours, lights, music, and oh-so-much showmanship! And darling, Josephine Baker was not only a singer and dancer but a celebrated drag icon, a true pioneer! I simply had to go and witness this extraordinary performance firsthand.
Donning my very best pink tutu, with a little extra sparkle to fit the occasion, I whisked myself into the throng of Paris's fashionable elite, feeling like a true Parisian princess. It wasn't just the drag on stage that was electrifying. There were ladies sporting head-to-toe couture! Feathers, sequins, bold colours, and so much extravagance! A sea of perfectly sculpted hair, fabulous coats and shoes! The streets of Paris were teeming with glam. I couldn't resist joining in with the shopping spree afterwards! Darling, vintage is in now! And let's face it, Paris is the best for finding little treasures.
The night itself was absolutely mesmerising! Josephine Baker's performance was just pure joy, and a masterpiece of entertainment. Her choreography, the costumes, her voice – truly a star! Imagine, the world being transported back in time, back to Paris in 1957 - it was as though I had stepped onto a silver screen. I have to tell you, the most incredible detail of the entire evening, besides Josephine's performance, of course, was that even though we are talking 1957 - the audience was wearing such stunning, bold looks. Some were in chic ensembles, like Parisian mannequins come to life! I loved the sheer audacity of the colours, such a bold move, especially considering that period's trends were so strict.
Just looking at those fashion images really inspired my latest performance look – a blend of classic cabaret with a touch of Parisian flair - lots of sequins, tulle and feather boas! After all, what is drag but the celebration of the best that fashion has to offer!
Paris, 1957 was a whirlwind, and oh so pink! I'm already dreaming of my next destination, darling. And I know exactly what you're all thinking. "Emma, how do you get there? Where does the pink tutu take you this time?"
My little secret, lovelies, lies in a simple fact – life is a stage, and the whole world is our dressing room. I, Emma, the Queen of the Pink Tutu, travel the globe not with a time machine, but with passion, inspiration, and my love for fabulous performance. I fund my adventures with performances of my own, in local halls, clubs, and every so often a glamorous drag ball, dripping in pink sequins! You should see me on stage, darling, it's like a whirlwind of feathers and flair, all tied together with a shimmering pink ribbon.
So don't just watch me, darling! Be like me! Join in the fun! Dress up, dance, sing! And who knows, maybe one day, you'll even see your face in this little pink tutu blog! Because in my world, everyone deserves to sparkle. So get those tutus on and let's shine!
Love always,
Emma
