Pink Tutu Time Travel: 6th June 1957, Post #450

Darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! This month we're taking a little trip back to 6th June 1957, where the excitement of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation was still lingering in the air like a whisper of sequined fabric. Oh, what a magical day! It must have been like stepping straight into a fairytale - pageantry, sparkle, and history unfolding before our very eyes!

But as usual, we aren't here to just watch history, we are here to live it, darlings! That's why I donned my shimmering pink tulle, which shimmered as brightly as the tiara on the Queen's head, and popped my cherry (of course, my time travel is purely fabulous not physical) for a magical trip back to this historic moment.

London, Calling!

We landed smack-bang in the middle of a bustling London. It was all such a buzz darling! Imagine! Shops full of adorable vintage outfits that just screamed 'drag queen potential' – like a flamboyant fish market with a side of glittery, theatrical history! The streets were full of women in beautiful, bold hats and exquisite tailoring. I swear I saw at least a dozen ladies with dresses worthy of an opening night, darling. They were my inspiration, that's for sure.

And the Theatre! Oh my darling, what an incredible show I saw! * “The Crooked Mile” starring Joan Collins. * I felt so chic just being in the same room, just being in London! My heart swelled like a beautiful tulle bustle, darling! This was history I was living! It was all about dancing, darling. The story wasn't important. I wanted to swish! twirl! sashay! all night and the performance seemed to inspire the whole audience! My goodness, did we have fun.

But what's on for drag this month?

I'm afraid it's a bit thin on the ground this month, dear! But don't fret, because my lovely Pink Tutu crew and I are going to shake things up! Remember, even with a dearth of drag events in the 50's there was a fierce underground drag scene bubbling away. My friends, a bunch of incredible performers like myself, have organised a little gathering this evening in a clandestine back room, with an intimate audience, but loads of fabulous outfits. We're not going to let the lack of a 'real' scene dim our light, darling, just let it fuel our passion!

Tutu Time Travels

As you know, I do love a good historical drag connection, so we had to do a bit of research on who was around this week and boy oh boy, what an interesting story we discovered, darling!

Remember, we're not always physically in these periods darling. Remember! Safety first! I time travel via my mind and spirit, darling! So I wouldn’t ever disrupt the fabric of time with my dazzling Pink Tutu presence. But there was a fascinating story to tell…

Remember all the exciting, flamboyant theatre happenings that were happening during this period?
And did you know that during the early 1950’s the Queen of Kitsch, Divine, who was known as Harris Glenn Milstead at this time, was still in high school in Baltimore, Maryland, America. What I would have given to do a drag queen exchange with that lovely lass! Oh, how fabulous it must have been to experience American high school and American drag. It seems to be just like here in Britain! Same issues and same joys!

And the biggest one? Oh dear, my sweet darlings, you've just got to hear this!

A real life drag queen, Christine Jorgensen, * had recently undergone *gender-affirming surgery, darling! What an inspiration to our community. It truly is all about the expression and the inner strength, no matter how we feel on the inside. Her bravery and courage are what allow us all to flaunt it darling!*

Imagine all those incredible early adopters, working through so much to bring the community into the mainstream. I can feel the energy they put out, and my own love and respect goes right back out to them. It feels good to connect with history in this way, especially with my Pink Tutu! I truly am on a journey, one which began on that day in 1957 and has been spreading joy through all of my drag performances, time travelling and travels!

Remember darling, we all started somewhere and every queen we see, on screen or on the stage has their own stories to tell. They've got a family just waiting to hear it! **

Now get on down to that drag event!* Or stay home and create your *own! There’s nothing quite like the expression you get when you create your own drag persona darling, nothing! Whatever you do, be fabulous!

That's all from me, darlings. I’ll be here next month for another glamorous journey into the past, so get those tutus ready, darling, and don't forget to follow Pink Tutu, where your journey to pink tulle begins.

And Remember! Stay tuned for more from the world of pink tutu time travels on my blog and next month’s big **announcement:

Stay Fab!

Love

Emma xx
