Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your monthly dose of drag history straight from your girl, Emma! Today's date is December 12th, 1957, and we're getting ready for a glittery evening. This is post number 456 for the archives – don’t you love those big, glamorous numbers? It just makes me feel so proper and refined!
So, let's hop into my magical pink tutu and whisk ourselves back in time! This time travel is particularly exciting, my dears, because it's all about that divine combination of glamour, theatre, and a dash of scandal – everything a good drag queen loves!
Fashion Focus: It's all about that New LookNow, back in the fabulous fifties, the fashion scene was a right scream! We've got Christian Dior's New Look, which, darlings, is just screaming for a good drag performance! Imagine cinched waists, full skirts, and those gloriously glamorous gowns, fit for a Queen! This era was bursting with vibrant colours, floral patterns, and that fabulous hourglass shape – simply perfect for a drag queen with a taste for elegance!
Think full, sweeping skirts with beautiful brooches and sequins, and remember, a great petticoat makes all the difference. But the magic doesn't stop with the fashion. The era was buzzing with music and dance, which I, naturally, find just fabulous!
Glamourous Nights at the PalladiumThe Palladium theatre in London is always a winner for fabulous drag nights. Today is Saturday, so we are probably going to find a beautiful drag show. They love their musical revues with great production numbers, featuring beautiful drag queens from London’s theatre district and from Broadway, too. It's truly the perfect venue for drag. Just picture it: twinkling lights, velvet curtains, and the music of a live orchestra swelling in the background. Ooh la la! We're talking real, authentic drag here, before reality TV even became a twinkle in someone's eye. Just the kind of atmosphere I absolutely adore!
Dancing and Dining at the SavoyOf course, no fabulous drag night in London is complete without a pit stop at the iconic Savoy Hotel. Oh, they love their elegance there! We are all going to be dining on delicious oysters, foie gras and Champagne, surrounded by dancing and drinking! It will be fabulous to rub shoulders with a real mixture of theatrical people. Some of the biggest movie stars, famous actors, and musicians might just pop in – what a mix! Remember, I have a fondness for historical dress, so I shall definitely have my pink tutu, perhaps even with a black silk cloak. One must blend with the local fashions.
Finding The Drag Queens Of LondonNow, we're looking for a few local heroes who are known for their divine performances, making the most of those 50s fashion trends, just as I do with my signature pink tutu! Let's remember, it's not about perfection, it's about the creativity, the humour, the drama and the glamour – just like all my beloved drag queens today. We want to see full makeup, beautiful eyebrows, bold colours, and, of course, all those stunning costumes! Remember darlings, this is before social media! You only see a performer once they’ve established a career. They’ll have been working hard for years, in a club or theatre to get here.
Now, while we're in London, don't be surprised to see a touch of "camp" on show, those cheeky moments of humour, a pinch of mischief. Let’s remember that drag, for many performers at this time, wasn't the easiest profession. Society and attitudes toward the LGBT+ community could be quite strict, so their talent and resilience to continue is to be applauded. But don't worry, we’ll find some good, glittery performances tonight!
Spreading the Pink Tutu MessageAnd, you know what else is making a splash on the global stage? That's right, the amazing American musician and actress, Elvis Presley. And can you believe it, but I love those signature white outfits, all those white suits, almost as much as my beloved pink tutus. What a coincidence, darling. They just go together perfectly! It shows that everyone needs a touch of pink in their wardrobe.
Before I go, I want to give a big shout-out to my wonderful audience! Remember, we need to share this message about spreading that pink tutu magic to every corner of the world. This month’s challenge is simple – rock your best pink accessory, from headbands to bags to shoes. Then, share it on our www.pink-tutu.com website using the hashtag #pinktutu! Just be creative, be proud, and remember to spread the pink!
Till next month, my dears! Remember, the world needs more sparkle!
Love,
Emma x
