Hello darlings! It’s your gal Emma here, back from another magical time travel escapade, and oh honey, this one was a real hoot! Grab your fanciest teacup, pour yourself a cuppa, and let’s have a proper gossip, shall we?
This time, my sparkly pink tutu and I whipped back to the gloriously glamorous year of 1960, and landed on April 4th – a date that, like a deliciously juicy piece of gossip, was simply begging to be explored.
Now, I won't lie, darlings, the year 1960 felt a tad bit restrictive. You know how we all love a good glitter-filled drag show nowadays, and in 1960? It was all underground clubs and hush-hush venues. You see, darling, the drag scene back then wasn’t nearly as out there and free-flowing as we enjoy today! But you know me, honey – I thrive on finding the little diamonds in the rough, the glimmering hidden gems of history.
And what a gem I found! In New York City, nestled within a club called the “Stonewall Inn” was this darling drag show called “The Cockettes.” It was a fabulous mishmash of counterculture and theatrical artistry, featuring fabulous drag queens, beautiful music, and of course, a sprinkle of scandalous mischief! Imagine the shock and awe when those gals sashayed on stage – real trailblazers!
It got me thinking, darlings. These were the ladies who dared to express themselves, the queens who were pioneering the drag scene, paving the way for us to sparkle even brighter today! Talk about girl power!
Back in England, it was a little less out there – a little more "polite," you know? I found a club called "The Flamingo" in London, where these lovely gents were performing under the title "Les Folies Bergère." While a bit less flamboyant, these boys certainly knew how to entertain with their comedic and campy flair.
But don't think for a moment that I didn't get a dose of that old-school glamorous glitz! In a Parisian cabaret club called the "Moulin Rouge", I found a performance that had all the drama and excitement I crave! Those darling queens weren’t afraid to experiment with their looks – all sorts of crazy, colorful costumes and outlandish makeup – simply magnificent! It reminded me so much of the "Paris Is Burning" documentary. Now that was real drag, darling!
Of course, I took the time to soak in the fashion, darlings! What better way to find inspiration for my own drag ensembles, right? 1960's fashion was all about elegance and grace – think sleek silhouettes, fabulous hats, and lots of bold colours! I was like a magpie in a glittering jewellery shop, oh, honey! Just imagine those big, pillbox hats, full skirts, and even those playful dresses with playful polka dots. Talk about classic chic, darlings! And let's not forget the fabulous shoes, the ultimate accessory to elevate any look. My dear, those stilettos had me weak at the knees!
You know, this time-traveling experience really got me thinking: how can we take inspiration from these fantastic drag queens of the past? Maybe we could take those outrageous costumes, and modernise them for our shows? Or we can go full retro with our make-up, hair, and even outfits! Perhaps even a full vintage-themed drag show! Now that would be an absolute dream, darling!
My dear, I could just imagine how our shows would have a whole new life if we channeled our inner 1960's divas. Imagine, the energy and glamour!
