Hello, my darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time travelling ballerina! August is upon us, the weather's glorious, and my, oh my, the excitement never seems to stop when you're a time travelling drag queen! This month, my pink tutu has whisked me back to 1960 - the dawn of a fabulous new era for drag, darling! Let me tell you, it's been a whirlwind of feathers, sequins, and oh, so much fabulous!
Paris, Mon ChĂ©ri!You know how much I adore a good drag show, and 1960s Paris was just screaming for a visit. Now, who better than the iconic Moulin Rouge to showcase the majesty of Parisian cabaret?! My time travel tutu swirled me right into the heart of the theatre, landing me smack-dab in the middle of a show that was positively electrifying! The performers, oh my darlings, were a riot of feathers, sequined costumes andâŠwait for it⊠PINK TUTUS! That's right! These were no mere ballet pink tutus either - think neon pinks, bubblegum pinks, even a bit of a shocking fuschia in there for good measure. It was positively delightful!
Now, the costumes were divine - let's just say it would have been a drag queen's paradise to step into their costume department. My dear, those plumes, those feathers, those glorious sequined dresses! The performers were an absolute joy to watch â such a show of skill and talent. I was truly mesmerized, lost in the world of beautiful costumes and elegant choreography!
I even caught a glimpse of Josephine Baker, an absolute legend of stage performance and drag history. Seeing her perform live would have been a dream, but even watching from the audience was truly inspiring. Just seeing her on that stage with her incredible energy and glamour â talk about giving a masterclass!
London Calling! But darling, the party didn't end in Paris! My pink tutu and I journeyed back across the Channel to London. Now, whatâs more iconic than the London Palladium? Itâs been a true drag Mecca since the beginning of the 20th century! Back in 1960, it was a dazzling spectacle. I witnessed the world-renowned performer, Danny La Rue, take to the stage in a truly unforgettable performance! Danny was known for his amazing sense of style, divine camp humour, and iconic drag looks â all perfectly polished and put together! Watching him on that stage, in a room filled with rapturous applause and gasps, was magical! It was an absolute joy to see history unfold, and truly solidified the brilliance and wonder of drag as a performance art form!
Beyond the Stage: The Birth of the Drag MovementAnd remember, 1960 wasnât just about the shows. This was also the era of burgeoning acceptance, and a real sense of a burgeoning drag movement developing globally! Magazines like The Drag Queenâs Diary, published in New York, and publications across Europe were really pushing the boundaries and breaking down societal walls by bringing drag and its brilliance to the wider public. We were seeing the seeds sown for what we would witness today - the dazzling world of drag reality shows, mainstream acceptance and a generation of incredible drag performers bringing the magic of drag to a whole new generation!
And it wasnât just limited to the magazines! 1960 saw the birth of âdrag ballsâ, especially in cities like New York, where these extravagant social gatherings allowed drag performers to truly express themselves through their chosen alter egos!
This is where my pink tutuâs work truly begins! The message of drag is one of unity, expression, and absolute fabulousness! The spirit of 1960 truly inspires us all to embrace the colourful tapestry of human individuality, and find the joy in expressing yourself with style, grace, and oh-so much glamour!
Shopping and Snatched FashionOf course, no trip back in time is complete without a spot of shopping! This month, my dear, Iâve gone absolutely crazy in Londonâs vibrant shops. I scored the most divine pink sequined dress that would have any queen beaming! I even treated myself to a dazzling vintage pink feather boa to add some extra zhuzh! Just imagine: me, strutting the streets of 1960s London in a bubblegum pink dress with a dramatic boa cascading around my shoulders. Now THATâS drag history in the making, my darling!
Now, Iâve said it before, and I'll say it again! I want everyone to wear a pink tutu. From the streets of Derby to the stage of the Moulin Rouge, this is how we express our individuality, our glamour, and our pure joy of being fabulously unique! And let's be honest, a pink tutu always makes you feel good - itâs pure confidence!
