Helloooo darlings! It's your favourite Derbyshire gal, Emma, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, the only blog where drag queens, fashion, and history meet in a dazzling explosion of tulle!
This month, we're twirling our way back to the 6th of June, 1962, a date that's forever etched in my heart (and sequins) because darling, it's a real gem!
Before we go gallivanting through the glittering archives of drag history, let's give thanks to our heavenly pink tutu. Honestly, I wouldn't be here, dazzlingly informing you about drag's glorious past, if it wasn't for the power of my own little cloud of tulle.
Now, as I said, 6th June 1962. A date of absolute wonder. What were we all up to, I hear you whisper? Well, darling, the world of drag was certainly a-twirl! Picture it: the shimmering spotlight, the throbbing beat of the music, and of course, the majestic silhouettes of the reigning queens.
But let's not be hasty! You want juicy tidbits? Let's delve deeper!
Across the pond in America - A fabulous drag queen named Miss Peggy is killing it at The Stonewall Inn in New York City, bringing her signature blend of glamour and wit to the stage. Now, The Stonewall Inn, for those unfamiliar, is soon to become the birthplace of the Stonewall Riots, but for now, it's just another fantastic haven for drag queens to show off their talents. It's truly exciting to imagine how those queens on that stage helped shape the fight for LGBTQ+ rights!
Meanwhile, over in London - Our beloved drag icon Danny La Rue, is absolutely ruling the stage. Picture him in his stunning attire, a perfect symphony of feathers, sparkles, and theatrical flair! It's no surprise Danny's known for being one of the pioneers of mainstream drag! And with a touch of a pink tutu magic, let me tell you, his performances are to die for.
But darling, it wasn't just about the glamorous queens - it was also about the behind-the-scenes action! This era saw a surge in popularity of the "Drag Balls." These dazzling events were a place for the entire community to come together to celebrate, express, and celebrate each other.
Now, one of the things I adore about this era was the impact of theatre on drag. Think of it like this: theatre served as a fertile ground for some of the greatest drag artists of all time to hone their skills and get their first taste of fame!
But darling, a little bit of gossip, it wouldn't be the Pink Tutu Time Travels blog without it! Now, you see, the legendary Miss Cherry, was rumored to be prepping her own production in London. It's a top secret darling! Can you imagine?! Miss Cherry's performances were truly revolutionary, she dared to challenge the boundaries of the time. Imagine the incredible fashion! I’d sell my best wig to witness that performance, wouldn’t you darling?!
And we can't forget the importance of fashion! Remember darling, those pink tutus weren't just a costume - they were a statement. In 1962, fashion was bolder than ever. Think bold colors, exaggerated silhouettes, and a sprinkle of extravagance - it was a fashionista's dream!
My darling, this trip has truly made me reflect on the incredible strides drag has taken, how it's gone from a world of underground bars to the spotlight of global television and pop culture. The power of those pioneers is something to be celebrated!
But darling, I have to dash! I'm off to put together an unforgettable performance myself, after all, I can’t let my own career get stale can I darling? But before you go, don't forget to head over to www.pink-tutu.com for more fabulous content! And of course, you can catch me dazzling audiences with my next amazing pink tutu-infused performance soon!
Stay fabulous! Love, Emma xx
