Pink-Tutu.com Post #526: 10th October 1963 - A Glittering Trip to the Past, Darlings!

Hiya lovelies! Emma here, back with another jaunt through the time machine! As usual, my fabulous pink tutu has landed me right in the middle of some delightful historical happenings. This time, I'm skipping right back to the 10th October 1963, darlings. Buckle up your pink sashes, it’s going to be a truly fabulous ride!

Back in the day, before all this TikTok drama

Now, you see, back in 1963, things were rather different. While we are obsessed with the newest Drag Race queens and all that social media stuff, well, they had different delights! Think poodle skirts, bobby socks, and music that makes you want to do the twist. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the fashion! Some of you darling things were still wearing those wide-brimmed hats that make you look like a mushroom - such an acquired taste! But don't worry, I brought some sparkle with me and tried to inject a little extra glitter, darling, so we'll get to that later.

* A Time Capsule of Drag History*

Speaking of different delights, let’s chat about the scene in 1963! Imagine: the glamorous nightclubs, the legendary performers… Well, on 10th October, the world was just a tad bit different in the way it saw drag. It was still very much ā€œbehind closed doorsā€ in many places, especially here in good ol’ Derbyshire, my home. I’d wager even I, in my dazzling pink tutu, would have caused a stir back then! However, it wasn’t just about being hidden. You had those fabulous ballrooms popping off all over, like the famous Stonewall Inn! Oh, imagine the drama! Those were the days! So, while I couldn’t waltz into a local pub and put on a drag show, I could definitely feel the magic bubbling just beneath the surface!

Let’s Talk About Shopping, Shall We?

Darling, a journey through time isn’t just about learning history, it's also about fashion, darlings! 1963 fashion was a delightful mix of trends. The era's sleek silhouettes and bold colours were right up my alley. Imagine, me, in my iconic pink tutu, but paired with a fabulously cinched waist jacket and pointy heels - it would be a match made in fashion heaven, wouldn't it? Think of the pictures we'd get, I’d be breaking the internet.

Fashion for the Pink Tutu Empress!

Thankfully, I was blessed with a fantastic vision (it is that pink tutu after all!). The shops in 1963 were bursting with textures like brocade, lace, velvet, and even sequins! It wasn't hard for me to find some seriously stunning pieces. Even in a place like Derbyshire, they still had an abundance of these classic textures. For my trip, I picked a vibrant blue dress with a plunging neckline and a dramatic, fitted silhouette - absolutely chic! It looked so glamorous next to my pink tutu, my darling, just sensational!

A Night at the Show!

But the best part, as always, is the entertainment. That night in 1963, I found a drag show right in the heart of New York! Yes, darling! I snuck onto a small stage in a little bar downtown. You'd be amazed by the creativity they were showing even back then, they weren’t even aware of the beauty of RuPaul's Drag Race. They did have these amazing performances with feathers, glittery makeup, and some fierce looks that wouldn’t look out of place on Drag Race! Now, my lovelies, they might have called it a different name back then, but the artistry and self-expression of drag was always there.

Let's make the world a pink tutu playground!

It was absolutely mind blowing. It's so important to see these moments, my darlings, because every decade adds something new and fresh to this drag history we have. That's why I encourage everyone, everyone! (well, those who are interested, not those haters in the corner, shush!) to embrace drag. I hope to encourage everyone to put on a pink tutu. I’ve been spreading that message wherever I travel through time. Just imagine it: The streets would be a sea of pink, darling, filled with fabulous queens strutting their stuff with joy and fabulousness! Wouldn't that be amazing?

Now, my darling, tell me all about what you've been up to this month! Did you find any cute vintage finds to add to your collection? Don't forget to tell us all about it in the comments below! And as always, make sure to stay safe, wear your pink tutu proudly and don't forget to sparkle!

Love and glitter,

Emma xx
