Hiya darlings! It's Emma here, your very own tutu-clad time traveller extraordinaire, reporting live from the year 1966 - the glorious, technicolour year of… March the 3rd, lovelies!
Now, I know what you're thinking. March the 3rd? Why is this date so important, dear? Well, hold onto your fabulous hats, because this date marks the first time this little ol' Pink Tutu Queen was able to jet-set off to this era.
(cue dramatic wind whoosh sound effect & sparkles)
But enough about me, darling. Let's delve into the fascinating world of drag as it was back in this wild and wonderful time, shall we?
I have to say, darlings, you just wouldn’t BELIEVE the scene! I touched down right smack-dab in the middle of New York City - the ultimate mecca for everything drag and fabulously fabulous. Think towering bouffants, dramatic eye makeup, sequins galore, and the most fabulous boots you ever did see. And of course, the drag shows! Oh, the shows! It was like watching a living, breathing history book come to life - but with extra sequins, glitter, and sass, naturally.
First up, a little trip to The Village Gate, which at the time, was the it spot for all the groovy drag queens. Think of it as the drag version of that chic Soho nightclub everyone wants to get into nowadays - but way more flamboyant and absolutely bursting with the spirit of the era. And darling, let me tell you, they were serving LOOKS - bold, statement-making outfits with feathers, fur, and tons of glittery embellishments.
Honestly, seeing drag performers rock these outfits back in the day, when society wasn't as accepting of drag as it is today, darling, well, it was quite a magical experience, if you catch my drift. And the most wonderful thing? These amazing queens weren’t just entertaining – they were also pioneers! Breaking barriers, challenging norms, and spreading the message of self-expression and fabulousness!
One queen I absolutely adore, Jackie Curtis, a true legend who literally redefined drag as an art form. Jackie was known for her extraordinary performances and out-there fashion, so fabulous that it could make a nun blush, and trust me, my dears, back then, it did! This fabulous queen's outrageous style was revolutionary. Think glitter and sparkles, but with an edge - like the coolest chick at your school, but with the fiercest looks ever!
Next up, I couldn't resist a quick stop at The Coliseum Theatre - it was like a kaleidoscope of glitter, colour, and sheer talent. Divine, one of the most iconic drag performers of the time, was known for her truly remarkable and truly stunning acts. This incredible queen had such fabulous flair on stage, darling, it just blew my mind.
You see, back then, drag shows weren't just shows, honey, they were revolutions in motion, like little pockets of freedom shining brightly in a world that needed them dearly. And to me, that is the true magic of drag, don’t you agree?
Oh, but you know what else I stumbled upon during my time travels, my darling? You can find the most absolutely exquisite pieces of vintage clothing and accessories all over. And let's not forget, I got my shopping fix at a little place called "The Crazy Horse" in London – the most fantastic vintage dress shop that took me straight back to that fabulous era. Let me tell you, my darling, the shops in London back then - oh, you just wouldn’t BELIEVE!
Anyway, that’s enough about my trip to 1966, darlings. I gotta run now and get ready for a big night out! It wouldn’t be time travel without hitting the stage and showing off some new tutu tricks I’ve picked up! Remember, dearies, always remember that drag is about embracing your inner fabulousness! Let your creativity run wild!
Love, light, and sequins!
Emma xoxo

P.S. Remember, lovelies, my aim is to get everyone wearing a pink tutu! It’s time to break those boundaries, and don’t you worry, with a bit of sparkle and imagination, we can do anything. You heard me! Anything! And maybe one day, even travel through time with a pink tutu! Just like me, honey!
