Pink-tutu.com - Blog Post #580: April 4th 1968 - A Tutu Time Trip to The Fabulous Future!

Hello darling darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu wearing time-travelling blogger, Emma, back with another installment of your monthly dose of drag history! Now, grab your sparkly stilettos, a steaming cup of pink tea and settle in because today we're swirling back to April 4th 1968 - the year my favourite flower, the pink rose, was all the rage and everything was simply divine!

Now, you know me, love, always embracing a bit of fabulous nostalgia, so I decided to jet off to this year on a mission, you see. You're going to love this one - imagine, darling, a fabulous drag queen history treasure hunt through time in my magical, glittery, pink time-travelling tutu, travelling through the eras and making sure everyone knows the history of fabulous.

Before I jetted off, you wouldn't believe the delicious gossip floating around my Derbyshire home! Everyone was buzzing about the new ā€œHairsprayā€ show that's all the rage in the West End. They say it's got extraordinary music and even more extravagant costumes. Honestly, my darlings, how much more glorious can you get? The world of drag was simply booming then - truly, a glorious golden age of flamboyant performances and exquisite costuming.

Stepping into 1968

Honestly, darlings, as I zipped through the time portal, I was blown away! Imagine, no online booking! The hustle and bustle of pre-internet life! People used telephones - that’s phones, darling, attached to wires - to speak with one another! Honestly, darling, what an era - how did they even navigate the world without my fabulously efficient time-traveling pink tutu? And of course, the street style! Oh, darling, I was floored - such panache! The women in their mini skirts, a burst of colour and sophistication - I could have just fainted! They just radiated elegance!

The real showstopper, you ask? It was the music! That soulful rhythm and blues, the funky grooves, the passionate lyrics! The beat pulsated with joy and the dance floor was always bubbling. It truly brought back memories of my time as a chorus girl! Just a touch of the "Soul Train" in that 1968 air, you see!

Drag in the Big Apple

Now, you all know that New York City is my ultimate drag mecca! Imagine, the bustling, the glamour, and all the fashion, darling - pure joy for a time-travelling fashionista like myself! I simply had to find some fabulous drag performances.

So I set off in a hotchpotch of pink - think fuchsia feathers and the palest shade of pastel pink with my glittering sequins gleaming - and my trusty pink tulle tutu on my search to uncover a slice of this drag history.

Imagine my glee, when I discovered a quaint bar called "The Ninth Circle." This, my lovelies, was a true dive bar where drag queens graced the stage and the crowds roared their appreciation - truly an electrifying energy, even in 1968!

Fabulous Finds:

The fabulous queen I was graced to witness? This dazzling dame with the name ā€œJackie.ā€ This fierce queen graced the stage with a powerful performance - the crowd went absolutely wild for this glamorous gem. I felt like a vintage movie star - like we were all transported back to that golden age of cinema!

She delivered a heart-warming song called "Some Velvet Morning" which she sang with so much gusto. Honestly, darling, I’m still feeling the goosebumps from the performance, that was true charisma at its finest! Her performance simply took me to another world – that vintage 1960s jazz feeling. The mood was truly one of a timeless classic.

The Ninth Circle felt like a community - everyone, from those sporting the wildest fashions to the dapper dandies, seemed to connect under the spell of this performance. You could just feel the love for the art, for the showmanship - it really got me thinking about how much I've always loved the energy at our local drag clubs, it's this love and energy that keeps it alive today, my darlings.

*A Touch of Glamour: *

This incredible experience just sparked my passion for fashion even more - a classic 1960s style with all that shimmer and glamour. You know me, darling, I'm always embracing all things fabulous.

My wardrobe is already bursting at the seams, I tell you, with more sequined fabric and feathers than a tropical bird in full bloom! My pink-tutu-time-traveling journeys through the ages have allowed me to find the most glorious treasures, oh the sequins I've snagged, the feathers, darling, the feathers! My tutu looks like a technicolor dream in its abundance! But darling, what’s a diva to do, when you stumble across treasures like these? It's all about sharing, I always say, it's the diva code!

And darling, if there’s one thing you learn after travelling through time with me in my pink tutu, is this - fashion truly is timeless. The way the women wore their long flowing dresses, with their wild bobs, oh the flair of it all. And the men in their three-piece suits and ties, oozing confidence with each step, darling!

Inspiration is Timeless:

But my journey's not over. After all, time travel isn't about just looking back. I hope I inspire you all to discover a little something new about yourselves! This trip made me truly believe that the history of drag, and its energy, is always a whirlwind of fabulous fashion and inspiring talent! And just remember, my dears, you don’t need to be in 1968 to rock a fierce look! Fashion and art are meant to be worn, so get your glitter on!
