Hiya darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, and welcome to Pink Tutu Travels, the blog that’s got you covered for all your drag history needs. Today marks a monumental moment in my time travels – it’s March 3rd, 1969, darlings! Prepare yourselves, because we’re about to dive into a glittery history lesson fit for a queen!
This month’s time travel adventures were extra special. Honestly, just saying the words "1969" brings a shiver of excitement down my spine. It’s such an important year in drag history! A year filled with revolutionary moments that shaped the world of drag we know and love today. It’s a year of fabulous outfits, powerful voices, and breaking boundaries… all wrapped up in a deliciously retro bow.
I’ve gotta admit, this time, the trip through time in my magic pink tutu was extra splashy! As I arrived in 1969, the colours seemed brighter, the music louder, and the sense of change in the air, absolutely electric.
So, you’re probably thinking, what could have been going on in the drag world on this day, 3rd March 1969? I mean, it was only three months after that iconic moon landing, right? And let me tell you, this era was definitely a hotbed of fabulousness!
Well, for one, a lot of drag in the late 60s was in the underground clubs. Not the huge, glitzy balls of today, more of these cool, underground spots with their own vibe, and I was absolutely living for it. I took a stroll through the East Village in New York City, the energy was incredible, a perfect storm of artistic expression and underground subculture. Imagine, a kaleidoscope of music, fashion, performance…the whole world was literally a stage!
And the drag shows I witnessed! Oh my darling! They weren't all in glittering ballrooms back then, that’s for sure! Think little bars, converted warehouses, and even secret basements buzzing with this electric underground energy. Every performance was a statement, every outfit a daring move. It felt like the whole scene was brimming with individuality and unfiltered creativity, just raw, fierce drag!
Now, back to our blog! We're up to episode 591, my dearies. Remember to head over to www.pink-tutu.com for all my past travel posts and stories about amazing queens!
The best part about being a time-traveling pink tutu enthusiast, my lovelies, is meeting the drag queens who inspired so much of what we see on the drag scene today. Back in 1969, these were the women blazing the trails, pushing boundaries and setting the tone. And one of the Queens I stumbled upon this month who just wowed me was Jackie Beat, an absolutely phenomenal drag queen with a stage presence that just lit up the room! It was incredible to see her rock out in one of the very first drag "death rock" nights in NYC. And you know me, my darling, death rock is one of my absolute favorite music genres - think the Doors and that New York gritty glamour - pure, fierce magic.
Now, you may be asking, how does one even fund time travel in a pink tutu? Let’s just say it requires a healthy dose of talent and dedication, which comes in the form of a good ol' fashioned drag performance. I'm all about showcasing my love for the art, so I gather the funds for my journeys through fabulous drag performances, whether it’s a swanky show at the local theatre, a sparkly bash at a swish club, or just putting on a show in my local Derbyshire pub.
There’s just nothing more thrilling than the excitement before the lights go down, and the rush of seeing the crowd go wild when the music starts to pump, especially when you’re showcasing all those iconic vintage fashions that truly belong in the drag history books.
So, that was my little journey to March 3rd, 1969! What did you think, my lovelies? Are you feeling inspired to travel through the drag scene, discover the past and its influences? Don't be shy! Remember, drag history is not just about looking back, it's about celebrating the artistry and evolution of drag! Let’s keep that pink tutu spirit alive and rocking! 💖✨💅
Until next time, darlings,
Emma, the pink tutu enthusiast 💖
