Hello, darling! It’s your fabulous friend Emma, back with another exhilarating trip through the dazzling world of drag! Today, I'm shimmering my way through a very special date - August 1969! Now, grab your fanciest pink feathered boa, darling, because this is going to be a big one!
Just call me Miss Time Travel Tutu!
As usual, I whipped up a magical time-traveling pink tutu this morning. I’m so lucky, you know! When I twirl in the right light, poof, my dreams come true! And, since my life revolves around dressing up and being glamorous, the most exciting way to experience the past is by witnessing those who dared to be different, the pioneers who pushed boundaries in fabulous attire! Today's journey takes us right to the heart of a revolution, the Stonewall Riots!
Now, while those Stonewall riots may seem like a serious topic, to me, they’re a giant, glittering symbol of resilience! The Stonewall Inn, a small Greenwich Village bar where drag queens and other members of the LGBTQ+ community could find solace and safety, became a symbol of fighting for our right to be ourselves! I mean, can you imagine not being able to strut your stuff in your most outrageous drag attire?
August 1969: Let me tell you, everything was in bloom!
Imagine New York City, August 1969, and you can picture the fabulousity of it all. The Stonewall Inn, though raided by the police on this night, served as a refuge for the marginalized LGBTQ+ community, a place where they could express themselves, dance, and celebrate their identity without judgement. That's just the kind of energy I'm always here for!
I saw drag queens of all shapes and sizes rocking the room, their makeup bold, their wigs a vision of vibrant hues! I bet the fashions were simply stunning - those slinky, glamorous dresses, and sequined shirts on the lads...just divine! Oh darling, I was mesmerized.
But more importantly, we had a real moment. A moment where we were celebrating being different, a moment where we were taking back our rights to be who we wanted to be! We were fighting back against a system that had oppressed us for so long!
I always say, "Don’t just drag on, darlings, fight for the right to drag!” And trust me, they certainly were fighting back in August 1969! It wasn’t always glamorous. But those courageous acts of defiance set a spark, which ignited a flame of liberation, paving the way for the beautiful future we know today.
Even now, whenever I twirl, my heart fills with gratitude for all the drag pioneers who paved the way. Without them, I wouldn't be here, standing proud in my pink tutu! We stand on their shoulders! The fights continue, darlings, but we have made such incredible progress.
Drag was happening all over the world!
On August 1969, drag queens and the LGBTQ+ community were making their mark in other parts of the world, too. From the thriving drag scene in London, where the legendary Madame JoJo's was a safe haven, to the growing popularity of drag shows in San Francisco – you name it, we were celebrating the magic of drag! I heard tell that the hottest drag show in London at that time was at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a space full of glittering promise! And I hear it's still open today - how fabulously historic! You see, darlings, this wasn't a flash in the pan, we have always been here. Just like this pink tutu - eternal and always shimmering!
I’ll be honest, I was bursting with pride as I zipped back to Derbyshire. The energy from those protests was incredible! They showed me the powerful role drag has played throughout history. And guess what? This is not the last you've seen of these pioneers! Next month, we're venturing back into a different time period, taking you on a fabulous adventure through drag history – I'm so excited, darling!
Remember, you can find out more about my adventures at my website www.pink-tutu.com! You can catch up on my fabulous life – you know I have some truly fantastic outfits for each one of these trips – plus drag performances, reviews of incredible shows and, of course, all things sparkly and pink!

Lots of love and glitter,
Emma xx
