Pink Tutu Time Travel: Blog Post #600 - December 12th, 1969!

Hello darlings! Emma here, your fabulous pink tutu-clad time-travelling guide to the world of drag! Buckle up your feather boas, put on your glitteriest eyeshadow, and prepare for a journey through time - it's Blog Post #600! Today we're skipping through the annals of history, landing on a particularly glittery December 12th in 1969.

Honestly, you wouldn't believe the fabulousness I found swirling through time. As I pirouetted through the air, my pink tutu billowing behind me like a fluffy cloud of love and sass, I felt the energy of this iconic year pulse around me. The Sixties were a time of revolution, change, and, let's be real, some serious experimentation in makeup and hair!

Oh, and you know me, always in search of a great drag show! December 12th in 1969 found me in New York City, where the drag scene was positively buzzing! It was all about being yourself, pushing boundaries, and strutting your stuff with that "I don't give a fig" confidence that we all crave.

But let's get down to the nitty gritty. Where were the queens doing their thing? Why, at the famed The Stonewall Inn of course! Even back then, this legendary watering hole was known for its electrifying drag shows and its welcoming arms for everyone who dared to express themselves, no matter what that meant. Can you imagine being part of that crowd, bathed in the strobe lights of a smokey NYC bar, surrounded by fellow pioneers pushing the boundaries of what it meant to be "different" back then? Now that's drag history in the making!

You see, darlings, December 12th in 1969 wasn't just another Friday. It was the start of something incredible, a powerful spark of a rebellion that would change the landscape of LGBTQ+ rights. And the drag queens were at the heart of it! Their performances were not just entertainment; they were expressions of defiance against societal expectations. They wore their looks and their identities like a defiant badge of honor. I felt so connected to these incredible pioneers, their strength and courage inspiring me to continue sharing our story.

But it wasn't just in the US that the drag world was flourishing. I travelled over the pond, feeling the cool wind whip around my pink tulle as I time-travelled to my very own Derbyshire!

You won't believe this: a fabulous drag performance took place at the "The Town Hall Club" in Derby, hosted by a drag queen who I swear, was channeling all the glam of the Sixties. It's hard to believe this building once played host to such incredible performers.

Imagine the excitement. I can picture the crowds filing into the club, all buzzing with anticipation to see what the queen had in store for them! Maybe she sashayed out in a feather-boa and sequinned mini-dress? Perhaps she sang a heart-wrenching ballad that had everyone weeping with emotion? Oh, I just love picturing the energy and the excitement of that era.

Across the globe, drag was booming. The sheer audacity of these performers, daring to live their truth, to perform their art, was truly inspiring.

You know, as I flitted around the world in my pink tutu, witnessing these magnificent queens and their performances, I felt this undeniable connection to them all. These early drag queens weren't just entertaining; they were challenging societal norms, building communities, and paving the way for us, your beloved pink-tutu wearing time traveler, to be the glorious, expressive queens we are today!

It was a time of great change, a time where people, especially within the LGBTQ+ community, dared to dream big and to be seen for who they truly were. We need to always remember that time and those queens who made it happen.

So darlings, let's carry the torch forward with grace, flair, and of course, a generous dose of pink tutus. After all, who says a revolution can't be fabulous? We need more pink in this world, don't you think? More fabulous, more acceptance, and more support for all.

That's my call to action today. Wear a pink tutu. Embrace your uniqueness. Be bold. Be daring. And above all, be your beautiful selves!

Until next month, darlings. Stay fabulous!

Yours truly,

Emma, your pink tutu time traveller.
