Post #609: Twirling Back to 1970 - A Tutu-tastic Trip to September 9th!

Hello my darlings! Emma here, your resident time-travelling tutu enthusiast, and I'm buzzing to share a real corker of a trip with you all this month. As usual, my fabulous pink tutu whisked me away on a magical jaunt back in time, landing me right in the middle of…September 9th, 1970! Buckle up, kittens, 'cause it was a right hoot.

Now, before we delve into the delights of 1970s drag, let me tell you all about my outfit! Picture this: a flowing pink tutu, its layers shimmering like spun sugar in the midday sun. Paired with a bright, candy pink top with some fabulous puffed sleeves, it was a symphony of fabulousness. Naturally, I topped it all off with my signature pink feather boa and a glittery pink headband - gotta match that time machine, don't ya know?

Arriving in the middle of a bustling 70s New York street, I felt like I'd been transported to a scene from "Hairspray," with groovy vibes swirling around me. And speaking of "Hairspray," it felt fitting since that era was brimming with flamboyant drag! Imagine: giant beehives, bright eyeshadow, and flamboyant, often homemade, costumes. It was the epitome of "drag is about expressing yourself!" No room for limitations in that era.

And guess who was putting on a spectacular drag show on this very date? None other than the legendary Divine, a true drag icon! Dressed in a towering wig and an unforgettable white gown, Divine's performance was electrifying, leaving the crowd spellbound. This legendary figure epitomised a certain "outrageous and shocking" aesthetic, reminding everyone that drag wasn't just entertainment, it was a statement.

Following the show, I did a little time-travelling shopping spree. The fashion was all about bold patterns, bell bottoms, platform shoes, and those daringly daring maxi dresses! A little bit disco, a little bit psychedelic, all tied together with a flair for the bold and unexpected. It was like stepping into a retro-chic dream!

But my adventure didn't stop in New York! The beauty of my time-travelling tutu allows me to be anywhere, anytime, which is how I found myself in the bustling, flamboyant London scene just a few hours later! It was a kaleidoscope of colours and styles. There was a true sense of community here, with clubs like The Gateways serving as central hubs for drag performances, fashion shows, and everything fabulous.

Of course, I had to check out a show. It was exhilarating to witness the theatrical prowess of drag queens performing on the streets and in theatres - think daring costumes, exaggerated makeup, and comedic wit that made everyone roar with laughter. It was raw, it was real, and it was undeniably powerful!

By the way, London was buzzing with an amazing new group: The Divine Blondes! They were a dynamic trio of drag queens with vibrant personas and an eye for stunning outfits. They were an example of how the era was ripe for new, innovative approaches to drag, bringing out individuality and sheer exuberance!

As my time-travel adventures wound down, I reflected on the day's extraordinary experiences. It was incredible to witness drag at the heart of a social revolution, a period when everyone, drag queens and the audience alike, seemed to be embracing change and challenging societal norms with boldness and grace.

Seeing drag thrive in such an extraordinary way was just magic! The energy, the creativity, the raw, unfiltered expression, and the spirit of pure entertainment… it felt like a moment in time where drag wasn't just about performance; it was about life itself! It reminded me that we have a responsibility to keep this energy alive today.

My darlings, whether you’re a seasoned drag enthusiast or simply curious about this incredible world, take a cue from those iconic queens of the 70s. Let your freak flag fly! Don’t be afraid to step out in a pink tutu, a flamboyant costume, and let your fabulousness shine bright. That's what drag is all about. It’s a beautiful reflection of who you are, a chance to break free and embrace your individuality!

See you next month, lovelies! And don't forget to check out my upcoming drag shows! I'm all about spreading the pink-tutu love! Remember, www.pink-tutu.com for all your drag history fix. Now, let's all twirl our way to a more glamorous world!
