Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu! This month, my magical, shimmering pink tutu has whisked me off to the dazzling, fabulous world of 11th November, 1970! Can you believe it's been 53 years since this day? Gulp - that makes me feel ancient, but at least we get to relive it together.
I can tell you one thing: 1970 is totally my kind of era! Let's just say it was the dawn of the most glorious drag scene I could ever dream of. Think shimmering sequins, platforms, wild hair, and some seriously fierce lip syncing!
Let's rewind!
It’s Saturday, 11th November, 1970. I've popped on my most exquisite pink tutu – imagine delicate tulle layers, shimmering sequins and a scattering of feathers – ooh la la – and landed myself right in the middle of New York City. I'm excited, honey, I'm beyond excited!
What do we have in store for this fantastic Friday? Oh, just the most glamorous events on offer – and I'm going to take you to every single one, from Broadway performances to intimate drag showcases in dingy backstreet clubs, it's all on my agenda.
First, we need to discuss The Cockettes! You know I’m absolutely obsessed with drag history. Well, The Cockettes are like…legend. It's a drag troupe formed in San Francisco - oh, this must have been SUCH a fun time to be a drag queen out in the Californian sun! They were known for their outrageous, performance art-inspired drag – think glitz, glam, and political activism wrapped in one fabulous package! In 1970, they were already performing all across the United States. They were just about to release their first ever album – "Cockettes: Tinsel and Glitter” (and believe me, I’m rushing back to 1970 to snag a vinyl copy).
Speaking of New York, one drag establishment I have to explore is The Pyramid Club. This underground club, perched uptown, is where a revolutionary drag performer called Divine is cutting her teeth. Divine, with her powerful performances, is creating waves - she's the ultimate Drag Queen, isn't she? The iconic hair, the bold make-up – divine is quite frankly an absolute star.
Now, darlings, as you know, my soul absolutely craves Broadway. I am thrilled to discover the highly anticipated opening night for the revival of “Hello, Dolly!” featuring a starlet, oh she is so talented, so wonderful – it’s none other than Carol Channing! I’ve watched her performances – they’re simply exquisite, divine – just heavenly! I have the highest hope she's wearing the most dazzling pink tutu! Ooh la la wouldn't that be something!
But, let's face it - drag is not just about these mega stars.
So, to end the evening, we’ll head down to The Stonewall Inn. Now, this bar isn’t just your typical, regular hangout – it's more like a sanctuary for the queer community! I'm told it's always pulsating with energy. A real blend of performers, and everyday people, who are just celebrating being their fabulous selves!
As the day winds down, we find ourselves dancing the night away amongst the glitter and the energy – and let me tell you, darlings, this era has such glorious dance moves, some disco, a bit of boogie, and a touch of glam – it's a dream come true!
As I slip into the ethereal fabric of my magical pink tutu to return back to 2023, I have to tell you, this trip through time has truly been a highlight of my month! I have learnt about some truly amazing drag queens, sensational shows, and witnessed absolute magic at its finest! I am brimming with inspiration to share!
Now, let's spread that fabulous pink-tutu-tastic love! I can’t wait for you to share your love of drag history in the comments. Don’t forget to share this post and let's create a whole community who embrace this incredible legacy!
Keep twirling, keep smiling, and most importantly, stay glamorous, my darling friends!
