Post #622: Back to the 70s, Darling! - October 10th, 1971 - A Tutuful History Lesson

Hello my lovelies! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller and absolute champion of all things fabulous!

This month, my magical pink tutu whisked me back to October 10th, 1971. The air was buzzing with excitement, the world was in the midst of a seismic cultural shift and frankly, darling, you wouldn't believe the fashion!

My dear readers, I simply must tell you about this iconic year. It was a time when flamboyant fashion was coming into its own. A time for bright colors, bold patterns, and an absolute disregard for anything boring!

Now, 1971 wasn’t all sunshine and sequins (though believe me, there was a lot of sequin), it was a time of social change. The civil rights movement was picking up steam, the women’s liberation movement was gaining momentum, and a new era of equality was on the horizon.

You know, it's all very well being a fierce drag queen time traveller with a magical pink tutu, but let’s be honest, being from a small town like Derbyshire, you can’t really take in this kind of international movement from a pub table! That’s why I absolutely have to time travel! I need to immerse myself in the excitement!

A Drag Explosion!

October 10th, 1971, was no ordinary day in the world of drag. Oh no! Across the pond in New York, the iconic "Cockettes", a flamboyant troupe of drag performers, were kicking off their first ever national tour at the prestigious "The Gate" theatre. Imagine, darling, these talented creatures performing their outlandishly beautiful blend of theatricality, comedy, and sheer camp in a packed New York venue. Talk about drag goals! I just imagine it was an absolute extravaganza, a true spectacle of artistry, laughter, and undiluted fabulousness!

I, myself, was absolutely gagging to get a glimpse, but unfortunately my pink tutu wasn't quite as advanced back then to make a cross-continental jump. It wasn't until about...1999, before I could get any time travelling done outside of the UK.

Anyway, back in London, the world-famous "Royal Vauxhall Tavern", still a shining beacon of drag today, was a hive of activity on this very date in history. The legendary drag performer Divine, in all his glam and grandeur, was headlining a fabulous cabaret, no doubt captivating audiences with his hilarious persona. Can you imagine, darling? This iconic figure, a true titan of the drag world! I absolutely must get my tutu to this time in the very near future.

And, my dears, across the globe, in Australia, drag was gaining a new wave of momentum! On this very date, the legendary performer, "Penny-T", was holding court at the legendary "St. Kilda Sea Baths" , entertaining everyone with her iconic performances – a legend making waves even back then, much like a sea nymph in sequins! I think this sounds absolutely fabulous.

Of course, this is just a taste of the fabulous happenings in the world of drag on October 10th, 1971! A time for fearless expression, audacious performance, and a whole lotta fun. It’s just what my heart craves. And I am completely desperate to see a few shows, too!

The Fashion – Let's Get into It!

Darling, I had to tell you all about the fashion on the 10th of October in 1971. Let me just say it was absolutely sensational!

Firstly, there was this new fashion trend for wide-legged trousers, flared jeans and trousers that just made everyone look like they had so much movement. The colours, darling? Absolutely divine! The most amazing shades of orange, pink, turquoise, and green, all vying for your attention! You know, all very glamorous and reminiscent of ballet costumes – especially the tutu! Oh, the tutu is back, you hear me?

Remember that iconic “Pucci” pattern? Those stunning abstract prints! You could find them on dresses, skirts, shirts – everywhere! They were absolutely vibrant and utterly joyous, giving this whole '70s vibe an additional jolt of fabulousness. The psychedelic pattern was all the rage, a vibrant ode to creativity, just like the drag performers!

Of course, for some of us, this fashion trend was no trend at all! My magical pink tutu made this vibrant decade easy! A few trips around a London or NYC vintage market for some pink felt, a sprinkle of some extra large feathers, and the best pink hair dye, and darling – my outfit was made.

This whole "70s vibe", as it is often referred to in this period, really did mark an exciting era in fashion history. Just like a performance, it's all about showcasing that fabulousness! It gave people the opportunity to express their personalities with a flamboyant spirit! This gave the world of drag some new and exciting styles and concepts!

And the Pink? Oh Darling, The Pink!

Don’t even get me started on pink! I literally lived in a pink dream back then.

It’s funny because, looking back at 1971, everyone had a bit of a thing for pink. It really became a colour to celebrate yourself, a joyous color, so in love with life and beauty. They used it everywhere, from pink velvet dresses to pink floral shirts. They would just be draped with yards of bright pink fabric. It wasn’t just a trend; it was a vibrant feeling. They knew pink wasn’t just a color; it was a statement! And that was all they needed to know!

And do you know what, my darling? Pink and sequins – you could practically feel this energy around you! The entire decade, darling, felt as if the world was all ready for a party and were simply wearing the fabulous pink and glitter for the occasion!

You can just imagine, how we were all just dancing in these colorful and flamboyant outfits. Oh the fun. The creativity was electric.

I Will Return. Pink Promise.

Now, it’s almost time for my monthly flight. I promise you, dear readers, I'll be back here again next month. And, you'll be absolutely ecstatic to hear that I'll be sharing the incredible happenings from the 10th of November in 1971. Let's just say that some incredibly amazing things are going to be happening in the world of drag and I cannot wait to tell you all about it!

Meanwhile, darling, keep those pink tutus ready because the world is just waiting for the perfect excuse to burst into a song and dance in the most outrageous way! Until next month, I hope that you have the most fabulous time and do not hesitate to pop over to www.pink-tutu.com!

Stay pink and keep those fabulousness high!

With all my love,

Emma, the Time Travelling Pink Tutu Queen.
